Lifter tick or valve contact?

Just did a head rebuild (new valves), timing components & various other fixes.

Did the lifter soaking/bleeding.. The car is still in time after about 10 minutes of running, but I just can't get rid of this ticking noise, and it's making me super anxious.

Is there any way to get a definitive answer on whether what I'm hearing is lifter tick or my pistons getting slapped?

I'm nervous. I don't like it :barf:

Post a video but it's just the lifters from what you are telling us. Also did you prime them in the engine?

I primed them outside of the engine. Didn't know I was supposed to prime them inside of the engine? Please elaborate.

I'm just really worried the ticking noise is pretty violent. I've heard plenty of ticking lifters and this just sounds a little more severe to me, but the car holds it's idle fine (outside of a surge, cause tbd)

did you get new lifters while you were there?

No, only one new lifter because I broke a paperclip off inside of it's predecessor. :p

Edit: It's starting to quiet down, but I dunno, I still have a bad feeling in my gut.

Did new lifters on a 1.8L and they ticked for a good half hour before they all finally quieted down and that was after 15 min of idle then did a drive around the neighborhood to finish them from ticking.

Only diff is that 1.8l lifters don't need primed-just slap them in.

It takes a while to get the oil built up inside of them....

Prob should have replaced all of them if just one went bad.

One new one against the other tired 15 can really offset the system.

This is what I did since one collapsed in that 1.8L - did a full replacement

Maddafacka -- I asked these very same forums if I should replace all when I broke a paperclip in one and everyone said just replacing the single one would be fine.

Guess there'll be an early tear-down in the not so distant future.. For now it'll have to do.

Thanks for the help guys.

You will be fine with just replacing one lifter. They don't have to be matched or anything like that. I haven't bought new ones in years. I've got a big bucket of used lifters. When i am putting an engine together i pull out 16, soak them in diesel for a few days, flush them out than soak them in oil, bleed and install them.

I'm just wondering if these are the original small oil hole lifters or the updated 3mm hole lifters? The small one's do tend to tick even when functioning fine let alone trying to get pumped back up.

Did you prime up the oiling system before starting it? Use any assembly grease installing them?

I pull spark plugs out un plug the cas and fuel injector resistor box and crank in intervals of 5 to 10 seconds letting the starter cool and that builds oil pressure in the the entire system. Usually after 4 cycles they don't tick.:thumb:
