1g turbo laser, fwd I have a hard intake, and a boost controller now set at 16 psi, i think eventually i would want to get an exhaust, would it be possible to get a 3 inch downpipe. 2 and a half inch all the way back and leave the stock muffler? My fuel pump is going in next, and i will probably keep the boost at like 10, until it gets here , however i experienced no problems running 16 psi. I would like to keep the stock muffler for the sleeper aspect, but would it really hinder performance that much?

Yeah, but you'd have the most F'ed up exhaust system ever. The system can only flow as much as its lowest flowing part. Your 3" downpipe gets held back by your 2.5" and your 2.5" gets held back by your muffler. There are some options for the sleeper look. You could hide the muffler, or run no muffler at all. Some companies also make very stock looking mufflers that flow well.

the idea of a 3" DP, 2.5" piping and a stock muffler sounds good for a sleeper setup, sadly it is a big restriction, although your car is going to pull hard but not as it should, you can feel the diference when you get an aftermarket mufler w/piping, for instance (and this is no joke) one day when you get a chance take your cat off and run a open downpipe (this is safe to your engine but watch out for cops) go for a ride to a lonely road and get on it like there's no tomorrow you'll see a much noticeable gain, and you'll be happy with the idea of getting rid of your stock exhaust eventually.

PS: dont forget to set your boost level a few psi lower as this will raise by removing your cat. my advice set it at 12psi and go for a test drive. you'll have fun

maybe i will try that, because as it sits right now , i like the sound of my car, and the power it puts down, its hard to get my fwd to grip as it is, i would really need a big power incentive to really change the exhaust...

If you leave your muffler stock you'll loose all power you gained from the Get go with the 3 inch piping.

IMHO - run 3" DP to 3" catback, then after the faxle, run a single 3" in, dual 2.5" outlet dynomax or magnaflow muffler- then install very stock looking 2.5" tips.
I'm installing that exhaust setup on my FWD Laser - I also want sleeper look- and you won't get much more stock appearing.

Remember that the rule of thumb for exhaust work is - a 20% increase in diameter = twice the flow.

hence, 2.5 X 1/5 (20%) = .5
so 2.5 + .5 = 3
a 3" pipe and two 2.5" pipes have the same (close enough) flow- so a single 3" in/dual 2.5" out will retain the stock look, yet flow all that you need.

Go with a Magnaflow. They aren't too loud and flow well.

Using the stock muffler is just stupid.

i dont like exhaust cut out because then when you upgrade your turbo, what are you going to do, drive around with that little piping behind your evo 16g? The only time it will drive properly is when the dump tube is open.. unless maybe if you were to get an electronic boost controller that you could change the settings of your wastegate from inside the car (very low boost when normal driveing and a high setting when you flip it open)

listen to these guys.

i went from a 2.5 crush bent from o2 back (peice of shizal custom hick made exhaust) to an 3" rnr o2 eliminator full exhaust from turbo back, and my car absolutely rips now. the notice is huge, not only in the butt dyno, but in the real life ownage of cars dyno.

what?

My biggest worry was the Obnoxious sounds some of those hondas have , even at about 10 miles per hour, Is this ever common with our cars?, I have heard some good sounding exhausts but not too many that i could deal with everyday. I could deal with just about anythign if the power gains are enough tho ;)

1.5" primary pipe with a 5" tip doesn't give quite the sound you really want- likewise the sound of a car has a lot to do with the pistons, the cams you run, the overlap etc...

As long as you don't go looking for the weedwacker sound- you aren't likely to get it. I'd stay away from Flowmasters, APC, and pretty much most of the 6" + tip size crowd.

Grand Nationals run a lot of Magnaflow, Dynomax, and Moroso - look at what people buy who have a sound you don't like- run away from that :)

how about just leaving the stock muffler on the car w/out having it hooked up to the exhaust system? you could just point the exhaust system down (not connected to the muffler) right before the muffler? you would be running no muffler meaning youll be loud as hell but atleast you would look stock. :D LOL..
maybe you could just hook up your 3' exhaust to your stock muffler and put a cutout right before your muffler. that way when you want to beat it and dont give a damn about how loud you are, you can just flip the switch and have a free flowing exhaust! hey....maybe ill try that! you gave me a good idea dude..hum... :talon:

Really guys, most people ignore DSM's anyway- a lot will look at the exhaust- if they see dual less than 4" tips- they again, assume it is non-turbo or at least stock.

Very few people would even guess you are modded if you had the magnaflow from above. Why put the effort into doing something that is at best gimmicky? 3" exhaust is what you need- put it on, and a muffler that doesn't attract any attention- you'll have the sleeper look, and it will sound good, and mostly, it will work well.

Most guys put rims on their car anyway- unless you have stock rims, stock every body panel, and don't sound like you're anything special- the only way you can get more sleeper is with a GLHS :D

its a dsm... They arent meant to be sleepers...

They are whatever the owner wishes them to be.

I figured that would have been self-evident.

i think you should just run a 3 inch with a high flow cat and a apexi n1 muffler my car isnt that loud i have a 2g gsx with a evo 3 turbo and it has that (rumble turbo sound to it) i love it when it sits at a idle and it isnt that loud at all and i have a tubular exhuast manifold too.

Other way around the whole idea of a DSM is to be a sleeper, why do you there is a stock appearance class?

Our cars can look or almost stock and still move out very well.......

I would get a magna flow muffler with daul 2.5 tips, and then paint the muffler and whatever exhaust piping thats visable flat black.

Now thats sleeper

:shhh: Im making a spray car, My 5lb bottle is going behind my dash....Im claiming 16G only:p
