KW Evo 8/9 coilovers for a 1G!

I have been thowing the idea of installing a coil over shock in the rear. There is a large selection in Speedway Motors - Street Rod Parts, Race Parts, Ford Flathead Parts, Sprint and Midget Racing Parts, Pedal Car Parts. A part # 106-specify for instance. There are pages of shocks available. There are many front struts for evos that we can get.My problem is to choose a matching set. What do you think of the idea? Does anybody have an idea what will match up?

I've toyed with this concept in my head a bit also. The rub is, what manufacturer is going to sell a pair of EVO struts for just the front? Here is another thing to ponder, since 2g rear shocks are said to be a near drop in on a 1g and EVO 8/9 fronts are very simple mods from drop in, how hard is it to bastardize an off the shelf set from literally any manufacturer?

I'll go one even better, aftermarket EVO8/9 rear shocks look to have a threaded on lower bracket. How hard is it to twist it off and screw on a Heim joint?

And to wrap it up, pick spring rates that work, have the valving range made to suit and Voila! 1g suspension anyone?

Or we can order some KW's from Robi and simplify our lives a bit...

my idea is take a bilstein#213-s7z1090 .Make a strut top to take a shock mount like part #917-21000.
The bottom of the shock install a heim joint to fit the trailing arm. We might have to make a bushing for the larger heim joint. Install a coil over kit and use the same spring rate we have been using.
All these part #s came from speedwaymotors.com

"The rear upper mounts are the same but should be divorced from the spring because of the angle to the spindle."

Just to be clear, is divorcing the rear spring from the upper mount necessary ONLY when converting the EVO setup for use on a 1G AWD, or is it necessary to achieve the best performance on any coilover setup for the 1G AWD? Ive been to the Far North site and reviewed the instructions for building your own coilover kit for the 2G, which showed the springs being seperated from the mounts on the rear as well as the front, but Ive never seen the finished product for the 1G, and furthermore, every brand of off the shelf coilover Ive seen for the 1G AWD does not have the spring seperated either:confused: On another note, since the Koni rears have been discontinued for the 1G AWD, would it be possible to cut the rear lower mounts from one's AWD rears and weld them to the FWD shocks, or are the lengths and valving different?

i bought a fwd 1g turbo dsm once as a part out car (it was running) and it had oem evo shocks in front with different top hats. All they did was put washers on either side of the knuckle so it wouldn't bounce around since its narrower. I don't think you can put a spacer on just one side as that would create bind, not so much caster.

I'd just buy the KW's that are already being made and use those, they look close enough to make it work.

Seriously, look at what us star quest guys have to do for the ONLY FULL COILOVER ON THE MARKET. up until late last year there were NO coil overs on the market, no stock replacements either. Your only option was custom fabing something (most people tried the mr2 method).

and yes, that is the prescribed method for installing these from D2

True, as the upper and lower pivot points wouldn't change, just the angles of the strut shaft and the upright casting in relation to each other.
