Knocking Noise

I just bought a 94 eagle talon tsi.....i have a loud knocking noise coming from the engine...it stops when i press the gas in gear and am driving. But when i stop or i am idling it is loud and very annoying. I bought it from a buddy and he told me that he thought the lifters were going bad. are they going bad or what should i do?

yeah... but the lifters would not stop ticking while driving, and then come back when idling... at least not instantly.
