k guys last night i was coming home from work and i was doing about 30 40 miles per hour on a back road and i heard a snap noise..right after that my car started knocking really bad..i coasted my car home and i took a look at it..i got under the car and the noise seems to be coming from the transmission area..what could it be? any ideas? thanks guys..

More information on when the noise is happening would be helpful. Can you re-create it at idle or does it only occur at certain RPM with the motor in gear and the car moving? Does it go away if you press the clutch in? Also, what does it sound like? Try to be as descriptive as possible, or even record the sound so we can hear it.

It could be anything from a rocker arm that's fallen off, a bad throwout bearing or a spun rod bearing.

Let us know,

Andy

It's hard to be sure without hearing it firsthand, but it could be the throwout bearing rattling around. Is your shifting affected in any way and does the car otherwise run normal?

Dollars to doughnuts says that it's the throwout bearing, especially if it goes away when the clutch is depressed. If there was a problem with the crank bearings walking it would get louder when engaging the clutch. It definitely sounds like that's your problem.

changed my clutch and throwout bearing and the knocking is still there..it starts right after i turn on the car and if i press the clutch in it will only go away for a little while..i tried driving the car and i couldn't go past second gear cause the noise gets worse and it seems like if the trani is going to lock up, it seems that if i keep on stepping on the gas something is going to break..could it be my trani? it also gets worse when im turning either way.. the knoking is consistant and it will go away only for a little while when i press the clutch in..any help would be greatly apreciated.

Today I took my oil pan out..everything seems to move ok in there..is there anything specific i should look at..is there a bearing somewhere in there that might be causing this knock noise?..could it be the trani itself?..I also checked my timing belt and it looks good too..any help would be greatly appreciated.
