I was checking out my knock sensor the other day, and I noticed it was slimy on the backside of it. I am pretty sure it isn't supposed to be like this, but I am just curious if it means it is bad. Any input is appreciated.

Sounds like the knock sensor is going bad, time to change it.... I bet your car have over 100,000 miles on it.

Check your timing a bad knock sensor will pull it.
Also if you take it off the rubber inside will be gone if its bad.

I've definitely got timing being pulled, but only after the first shift of my auto trans during a WOT pull. Can a bad sensor create "false" knock events? I hear no audible knock while timing is being pulled.

Of course a bad knock sensor can create a false knock. Like the others have said already, if there is goo coming out the back of it replace it.;)

thats how I did it.

I have small hand and arms so it was an easy job for me. I was able to reach up there with a wrench and pop it out. I did it also on my buddys car, his was super tight, probably no antiseize (and thats what she said), so I just used two wrenches, like a breaker bar, but we had a lift at the time.

Cool...one further question. How are you guys getting to your knock sensor to change them? From underneath?

I usually get at it from the top by reaching underneath the intake manifold from the drivers side. Of course I have only done this on 1g's and they all had the a/c compressor removed, so I imagine that frees up a little room. They can be tough to get to though and like I said I've never done one on a 2g. Good luck:)

I tried the other night with a buddy from the drivers side but the ac compressor was in the way. I'd rip the ac out but damn, cold air sure is nice in the south.

Sounds like you'll have to go from underneath the car then. Since you are replacing the knock sensor you can cut off the wires so you can get a deep socket on it instead of using a wrench. That should give you a better bite on it and make removal easier.;)
