Knock off Greddy Type S bov

Mrboxx, first of all I have searched and not read one post where someone said their fake Greddy failed. Please link to the posts. Second, you really think Greddy would tell you anything but 'ours are better for xxx reason, theirs will fail'? I would like to see some proof of what they're saying.

And.... Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone! :D :dsm: :D :dsm:

So I pulled the small spring and am only running the heavy spring with the screw adjust only a small way down. I replaced all the allen key screws around the top with new ones from home depot because I could not tighten the old ones enough with out them stripping. I also added a bead of RTV around the entire top piece where it meets the base. So far I can say nothing but good. At low boost (1-8) psi it makes that chirp sound which I assume is the "signature" sound, if I give it the full 20psi I get a nice whoosh similar to the 1G bov. No surge with the bov setup this way. I leak tested it to 20 and it holds very well, just a small leak from the lower nipple. Haven't diagnosed that one yet but so far flawless operation with minimal modification to it. I would suggest you perform those steps before using the bov though... also teflon tape on the top screw... and boost leak test it!!

^^ Yes, that's specifically the post I had in mind. Note where he says "The rubber seal was cracked." i.e.: possibly failed due to oil exposure/weak membrane material, which agrees with what the rep from Greddy had said would happen.

I'm not trying to tell anyone how to spend their money or what to buy. Everyone is totally free to buy $12 fake-B&M shifters and $40 fake-Greddy BOVs and $300 fake-Evo3 GT turbos to their hearts' content. But I think that a company that's been around as long as Greddy knows that a lot rides on the product they produce. Yes, it's in their best interest to say that their product is superior to a copy, but in saying that they have examined the copy and found it to contain sub-standard parts is putting their word as a reputable parts manufacturer on the line.

Of course we all know that no one ever has any problems with the Greddy BOVs.

Greddy Type-S bov leak?
BOV not opening properly
Greddy Type RS bov surging
Greddy Type-S leaking?
Greddy Type RS leaks...
Greddy bov makeing a sqeeling noise... heeeelllp
Is this a fix for a leaking Greddy Type S BOV?

TurboKID69: Thank you for testing and reviewing the "knock off". I too will be putting one of these to the test. Worse case scenerio - I'm out $ 40.00. (as opposed to Greddy - worse case out $ 200.00)

Definately keep us posted.

Companies flat out lie all the time. It's not uncommon at all. Ever seen those commercials for the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze? What's funny is that air filter does absolutely nothing. What's more funny it releases harmful ozone into your air wich actually CAUSES the things like asthma that it is supposed to help prevent. And what did Sharper Image do when Consumer Reports revealed that their product was worthless? Sued CR for saying it and 'stood by its product' LOL. Almost every commercial has a complete lie in it. That's how companies sell stuff.

I have a Type "RS" knockoff and its great , has greddy flange, and sounds/looks like my friends type rs greddy ... I bought mine off of ebay also ... cost like $50~ + shipping

I have taken apart my Greddy Type S that is on my '91 Laser RS once or twice to explore using either spring and from what I saw in the pictures above, the knock off internals look exactly the same as my Greddy. In my opinion, I say try out the knock off, if it doesn't work well for you, then at least it didn't cost as much as the real thing.

Could you please give a little more info? How didn't it work? Did you set it up right?

Yes I set it up right. Changing bov's is alot easier than tranny swaps. LOL. Anyways. It didnt " blow off " it made no sound what so ever and leaked no matter how tight I had it. Waste of money.

i usually don't buy knock-offs such as electronics and other stuff that is important...such as a BOV
but an intake tube, for example, that costs on ebay maybe $20 will do the same thing as a injen one that costs close to $200
or like some people mentioned the b&m short shifter...the knock-off costs like $50 shipped and it's exactly the same as a real one

Like I said before, I'm sure many people have bought knock-off's and are completely happy with their purchase. Good for them. I myself have an Injen knock-off intake pipe. I figured, it's really hard to screw up a pipe, so I got it and it works just like a pipe should. But there are some things that I wouldn't sacrifice quality on. For everyone who says that no matter what, they'll always go with the cheaper, knock-off item if it's nearly identical, there's a guy on the corner selling Rolex watches for $20. They look just like a Rolex, they keep time just like a Rolex. Should I tell him you're interested in one? And I'm sure that in a few days/weeks/months/years when that watch stops ticking, he'll be there to fix it for you. Buy a knock-off and get screwed and you have no one to complain to. Buy a real deal and you have the company to send the item back to for a replacement.

bad analogy. for the price of a Rolex, you could buy 50 Folex's, and youd die before you run out of them. if it breaks, you could find ANOTHER guy on ANOTHER street corner with another Folex, and youd still be saving money. then again, i only rock Fossil watches

hell, if there were the greedy knockoffs when i spent 300 bucks on my Genuine Type-S Compressor Surger, i wouldve gladly gotten a knockoff. a BOV is a very simple device, a diaphram that is controlled via vacuum source, with a adjustment that adjusts how tight that diaphram is. not rocket science by any means. id say buy the knockoff, if it doesnt work, sell it to some honduh kiddie and get a SSQV or other real BOV.

My buddy had a HKS SSQV Knock off sounded like ass! It didn't even sound CLOSE to a real HKS SSQV at all and it caused him problems all the time, and my other buddy with a knock off greddy did the same thing sounded like ASS.

Stop being cheap and buy a real one before you smash your fins on your turbo from a 20PSI rush of air going the wrong way when you slam the throttle body plate closed.

I think something that is very important that no one has said yet is that the Greddy Type S BOV has been discontinued by greddy. Personaly, I love the greddy type s because of the way it sounds. However, they are prone to failing in many ways, hence the reason they probably got the axe. My greddy bov (the real deal) is currently ghetto rigged to work properly because the threading inside puple cap is worn from over adjustment (i guess) and now i need to tephlon tape it to make sure its air tight. I can't even adjust it because i would have to re tape it every time. So, I do not want another type of BOV besides the greddy so unfortunatley i have no other option then to buy the Knock Off. Personally i am not scared because i have heard many positive reviews, more then negative that is. Plus, at 40 dollars, even if it breaks, it would take 4 knock offs just to hit the 200 price of the original! Believe me, i would pay another 200 for the real one if that was an option, unfortunetly when it comes to the TYPE S, the knock off is the only option.

actualy it would take 5 knock offs! 5 x 40 = 200 LOL. And i forgot to say, it realy is a simple design, it is simply reverse enginered, plus w/ out the expense of advertising, and cheap labor, you could make a decent product and sell it for 40. even if it is only costing them 20, that is still a 100 percent profit for the manufacture. And actualy, the ones on ebay are only 20 dollars! the other 20 is shipping! and by the looks of the inside of the fake greddy and comparison of the original, it does look exactly the same.

Why don't you just send it back to Greddy like Mrboxx said you could do? I'm guessing though they'll tell you too bad like ACT did for most people after their cluch blew up. That's why paying for a the "real" thing doesn't make sense. All the company's claims are just that, claims. Weather they actually do it is another story. But prove me wrong, call Greddy.

And btw, Megan was once one of those "knock-off" companies. And look at them now. They make products that are superior to their competitors in every way and are still cheaper. Like their N1 style exhaust--ss not aluminized, less bends, and cheeper than the Apexi. Makes ya think Apexi's been charging a bit too much huh?

Alright to setsome thing clear aboutall the people that have bashed ssautochrome for all there stuff i.e. turbos , manifolds, FMIC, wastegates, and the ever so relavant BOVs that are yes knock offs. ssautochrome gets its parts made by XS-POWER which actually manufactures them themselves. They are actually legit and when i say legithave alot of experience in automotive racing. They are right in mooresville NC . if youknow anything about mooresville and what its the home of its pro racing usa thats where all the shops and companys build stuff for nascar and alot of teams are actually there.( I mean like these guys ahve serious equipment etc do the job right and are just trying to make the part as competive for less )
I know cuz i go there on a bi weakly basis im a motorsports technology major. So just dont call ssutochrome or xs power cheap knock offs. they give good deals and some times offer warranties on thing now. up to a year tobeat on things.

Now i can say that yeah someof there stuff is crappy but you have to give it a while for them to R&D the product they are selling just likethat Type S knock off. Now i Can say I have bought a huge FMIC and never had a problem cools really well and i bought a knock off RFL which worked really well for 6-7 months . it failed because the piston and sleeve began to wear because i didnt know to lubricate it. so it stuck and flutter went in the garbage with no regrets. LOL after playing baseball with it across the parking lot. further more to say i would have cryed if it was a real RFL and probably buried and bough a tombstone to mourn for it.

so Knock off arent so bad and I went back to a 1g crushed . Im interested in the review of the type S. want one with a actual diaphram

There are a lot of wise words going around here. I'd tell everyone to check this out. I believe what PSisHi is saying, knock off's are garbage. You do get what you pay for, and yes, the monopolies of the street racing companies can charge whatever they want, and unless they do price matching, there isn't much we can do but bite our tounges and pay, or do your research and find them cheaper.

They may "reverse engineer" parts there in NC, but they are manufactured in China. No friggin way you could manufacture specialty parts that cheeply in the USA. I think it was Ron Shearer that said the SSAuto headers are sold for less than his materials cost. Since you are there all the time, snap a few pics of their "manufacturing" facilities.

Why release something that has not been tested  So when is it safe to buy from them then?

Are you sure you're not a a Marketing Major? Cheep, crappy, sometimes warrantied, failed after 6months are not adjectives I'd want used on parts I buy :toobad:
