i just bought a 97 gsx its all stock and so far i love this car. i have 4 questions though

question 1. is it possible to run 87 octane on this car or is premium the only fuel i can use?
question 2. the 3rd breaklight has something inside bouncing arround how do you take it off?
question 3. i dont have a clicker for the car how can i get one? and how much do they cost?
question 4. what size speakers go in the front and the back.

You have to use premium fuel, 91 octane or above. Anything else is going to cause damage to the engine.

No dont run 87 you will get predetonation and possible knock, both are bad for the motor. Rum premium, your only going to spend 2-3 dollars more per tank.

Your going to have to take that apart to get it out.

Dont know the cost (guessing around $35-$65), but you will need to go to a dealer and they should be able to set you up with a new OEM one.

Not completely positive on this one but i want to say that the front is 6.5 inch and the backs are 6x9s, look into it more, call the dealership about the clicker and ask about speaker sizes, im sure they will have that information also.

Goodluck:thumb:

edit: just found out that fronts are 6.5

On the rear speakers, which are 6x9's, be sure not to get speakers with a big magnet. I had some 4-way Kenwoods where it wouldnt fit in the original speaker opening because it was too shallow, the magnet would hit. There may be someway to mount it further out but I am not aware of it. Good luck with your GSX and be ready for some headaches if you plan on modding it. :dsm:

Ok thanks guys for all the answers. Im not sure if there is an amp in there or not there is an aftermarket deck already installed. Can the stock amps work with the aftermarket deck? Also when switching out the speakers if there are stock amps will they work with the new speakers? Also i plan on getting a blow of valve but i was looking at the stock pipe and the bov valve and they dont match up. What do i have to buy to get it to fit? Also i live in cali so id like to find parts with carb numbers if possible could you post a link for me. Thanks

The best and cheapest blow off valve upgrade would be the 1g bov, which runs about 100 new, 50 or less used. It is not a direct replacement for the 2g bov, you will need to get a flange put on. A better solution if you plan on keeping your SMIC for a while is to get upper intercooler hard pipe that has a 1g bov flange on it already. Remember that our cars are recirculated, so aftermarket bovs often need modification to work with our cars.

Sorry to say, But he will not "break" his engine running the cheaper gas. He just can't turn the boost up alot and beat the car etc. It is not a ''sin'' to run 87 in a car if you are just driving it around normal.....

Well the car is all stock and running stock boost. I think ill be safer with at least 89 what does engine knock sound like?

It is not ''knock'' that you are thinking of. It is when your car is detonating. You need a logger to see if you're ''knocking/pulling timing/detonating''. I'm not saying to use the cheap gas, I'm just saying that if you are not going to be under boost from every stopsign/streetlight, You aren't going to ''blow up'' your car.

yea i usualy swtich gears at 3- 3.5k rpms. i mainly do freeway driving too. Where can i get this data logger at? Will i need a laptop to use it?

 Sorry to say but detonation can ruin your engine, read up on any site you find about detonation and using higher octane when you have a higher than normal compression engine. Driving and shifting at 3500rpm may not really hurt it that much since its actually a lower compression motor becasue of the turbo, but when getting onto the high way or passing a car you will definately hit boost, if you do your engine will sound like a diesel and thats really horrible for it, will ruin pistons, rings and walls also you can burn your spark plug because of detonation too .:nono:

And you CAN hear detonation becasue a diesel engine is what detonation sounds like, diesels dont have spark plugs so they use high compression to burn thier fuel, but they are made to do that gas engines are NOT.

run premium gas, its not that expensive. :thumb:

Sorry to say but I had 8 modded dsm's already, I know what detonation is. If he is just driving around cruising, He is not going to hurt a STOCK car from using the cheaper gas. I've ran 87 a few times, And my car DID NOT break.. I'm not going to sit here an argue about if he can use 87 in his STOCK car, Without boosting around town/highway all day. I for one did not have a problem when I hit the wrong button. Everyone has their own opinions I guess, But you can't post anymore on this board without getting bitched at. Do what you want, It's your car really..

you COULD use the lower grade gas, but I wouldnt step down to hard on the happy pedal:thumb:

Basically just use premium.

you can use 87 octane but if you are looking for overall performance in the car, i would not go below 92. It is said in the manual to use 91 and above. I've owned 3 dsm's and in my 97 gst, i accidently used 87 and i noticed a difference in the smoothness of acceleration and ride of the car. hope it helps man

ok you ran it a few times and gotten lucky, he wants to know for long term use. I dont really give a shit how many DSMs you have owned, what matters is how much you know and learned. He WILL have problems and PREMATURE weare if he runs 87 octane, the car is not made for that low of an octane gas.

As I said, It's his car, His decision. If he thinks he can get away with it... More power to him. I treat my car good although alot of other members are always bitching about gas prices. I am not trying to argue with you, and I think you are taking everything i say, The worst wrong way possible.
