just bought a 97 gsx here are some of the things it came with

fmic

t50oh turbo

fpr

divert er valve

boost gauge

im having some problems such as

fuel cut on idle around 4k

when im driving at there is a fuel cut a 4.5k, and the turbo isnt boosting much maybe like 1-2 psi. i noticed that the diverter valve gasket was rtved. i took each plug wire out to check and see if it goes away with a certain coilpack but it still does it.

when im idle the fuel cut acts like a rev limiter. when im driving the fuel cut feels like i hit a wall then jerks then slowly gets past the rpms. what could be going on?

Sounds like you have a really really bad boost leak. Do a boost leak test, and that will probably fix up your problems.

would a boost leak cause a fuel cut, and how would i perform a boost leak test? oh and also it needs a new alternator , because its only charging 12v not 14

look around, there is a ton of stuff on the forums on how to make your own/how to do it.

Yes, it will cause fuel cut... Basically, with a boost leak, your MAF is reading more air than what is actually coming in. The false amount of air is triggering the ECU's fail safe (fuel cut).

This will probably also fix your poor boosting problem.

thanks for the info, also my tranny grinds in first a little bit. other than that its a good car

I assume the turbo housing is a TD05H, not t50oh... And there are many turbos with that housing... are you referring to a 14b, 16g, etc.

Regardless, if you're not building boost, it's because of

-Boost leak
-Problem with the setup of a boost controller (or the unit itself)
-Wastegate problems

Your problem sounds like boost leak. Considering you're not building boost and you're hitting fuel cut.

yeah a boost leak would cause fuel cut. fuel cut has everything to do with airflow. if you have a boost leak, the turbo is working harder(pulling in more air then it normally would) to make the desired boost level. and if the ecu is seeing more air then the system can support it cuts the fuel. :thumb:

okay guys i will get back to you

yea, no days its hard to buy a dsm that doesn't have any problems, which means check your car thoroughly when you get a chance, leaks, wiring, etc. If you find anything else out of the ordinary don't ignore it

i also noticed there may be a small oil leak some ware on the bottom of the car. ill take it to my mechanic tomorrow. the car is so low.

i took it to my mechanic today and he thinks that the turbo is dead. i dont see how this is possible because. it nosts 5 psi when im on the freeway with the occasional fuelcut

Did he do a boost leak test on it? IF not than fix it yourself or take it somewhere else that knows about boosted cars.

Lmao... "I don't have time for a boost leak". I generally test my car whenever I am doing maintenance. If you don't have time to change your own oil or spark plugs you don't need a dsm unless you have deep pockets.

Most of us dsmers can boost leak test in our sleep. Its like a habit and like stated above its performed often. If you cant find time to test for boost leaks then maybe the car's just not for you. It cost me $5-10 to make one at a hardware store and like 2 mins to test.

Please do not get discouraged. As the brotherhood has mentioned to you already, it may very well be something very small, and in most cases kinda thing that makes you go, I cant believe it was only that!

The whole point to the advise you have been given thus far is to get you to get your hands a bit dirty as "DSM OWNERSHIP" goes hand n hand with that. I will not say its a daily thing, but it most certainly is part of ALL our lives. It truly is what makes these cars so special. There is a wealth of information on this site and you will quickly find out most members are more than ready to help, even come out to give a hand!

General mechanic shops DO NOT specialize in our beloved dsm's or modded turbo cars for that matter. So they will in their "ignorance" usually give ill advice or discourage you as they themselves do not have an answer for you.
That said, there are countless shops that can help that are more than qualified if you take a bit of time to search.
As for your problem, please try and give your car a basic tune up by yourself with someone qualified watching over you so that you become familiar with the basics of your car. Have fun changing and gapping your plugs, wires, locating and fixing oil leaks, boost leaks, making the boost leak tester, installing gauges etc etc etc. The list is long but so much part of owning a dsm brother! Baby step it and you will have a good time getting to know your car. WE ALL HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS!!!

I agree....

After the boost leak test, be sure your base fuel pressure at the AFPR is 43.5.

Just take the vacuum line off and plug the hole, then adjust the knob accordingly. It's probably not your issue but will help avoid further problems with this car.

Do you have a Boost controller hooked up? If so which kind? and are you able to see how it is hooked up?
