Just bought a 1997 GSX!!

Just bought a 1997 GSX with 142,000 on the motor..older guy owned it..had a rebuilt trans at 140,000 and has new clutch..I bought it for 3500..Do you guys think thats a good deal..body is perfect..I think it will need a rebuild soon..or Ill just buy a 1g Head.. Let me know

It's a great deal if the motor's tight. The best way to find out would be to perform a compression test. Pick up a tester aut your local auto parts store and do it yourself so that you always have it available for trouble shooting. If the compression test results are strong then leave the motor as is and follow up with routine maintenance to make sure everything's working the way it should be. Also, make sure you visit http://www.vfaq.com as there is a wealth of information that you'll find helpful.

yeah its a good deal i spent more then that for my non turbo a year and a half ago and payed to much for my non runing talon. post some pics and let us know how its going.

Yup, doing a compression test will tell you a great deal. You can find information here on how to do one if you haven't done so before:

Also, make sure you follow up on Ed's link to our on-site tuning guide. 1G heads are something that happen way down the line and there are other things you can do to enhance performance before you reach that stage.

Let us know how the test comes out and make sure the regular maintenance is taken care of. Adding mods won't help if the timing belt lets go and takes out all of your valves.
