So how many of you guys in here have jumped timing in your car at interstate speeds and come away with only needing a new head and timing kit instead of a whole new engine? There's a 95 AWD Talon I'm considering picking up and he said it jumped timing at 75mph and is selling it because he can't afford to fix it now, but hasn't taken it apart so unsure if it needs a whole new engine, or just a head.

It has 128k I think it was. If I purchase, I can't decide if it's better to put a rebuilt head on it with a new timing kit (probably $1100 or more worth of parts and labor myself) and run with his lightweight flywheel and upgraded clutch, or purchase a friends insanely cheap 6 bolt motor that runs and was in an older lady driven car, put a timing belt/water pump/new pulleys/gaskets and seals on it and convert the car to 6 bolt and still have to purchase a new/used 6 bolt flywheel/clutch setup.

You won't know till you pull the head how the pistons look. Unless you have a small camera and can look down the spark plug hole. It could have just bent the valves, it could have put a hole in a piston who knows. If he's selling it cheap and the shell is worth it, grab it and plan on a new motor for it, or at the least a new or rebuilt head and timing components. You might get lucky!! ;)

This happened to me last summer. It probably only bent the valves. Mine skipped timing when the B.S belt broke.. I removed the B.S and redid the valves/timing kit and has been good ever since. Go for it.

A few years ago my bs belt broke and the timing jumped while doing a 4th gear pull to redline. Only smashed the valves. Since I didnt have the dough for a rebuild I just went to the junk yard and took all the valves from another talon. Slapped them on my head (lapped them of coarse) and the car is still running ~5 years later. Took me less than $300 to rebuild LOL

I had a belt break on me at that speed once upon a time.Bend all 16 valves enough to crack the guides, i was lucky enough that the pistons didnt get damaged.Put a new head on like nothin ever happend. However i know others have not been as lucky and valves are embeded into pistons. Its always a gamble what you'll find. Good luck

Girl I know bought a 2G like that- belt "supposedly" broke at idle....when I removed the head, I found all 16 were bent- so that was a lie.

I built a new head for it, and gambled on that being all that was damaged...and the car ran great. :D

How do you jump timing if your timing assembly has been updated per regular maintenance procedures? Just curious.
