I've searched with out finding a clarifying answer for my situation. Ok i just got my car back up and running. After stroking it, i get in in the other day and go to drive it after only getting to put 300 miles on it. So the timing belt jumped like three teeth. Great i cant catch a break with this car  , so i retime it and do a compression check. No compression in cylinders three and four. So my question is what would make it jump time, and can i just smooth the pistons if their not bad. Thanks for the input

Chris

Did you put a new tensioner in, I would hope/believe so. You will have to check how bad the dings are in the actual pistons to determine if you need new pistons.

The number one thing I see that causes this very problem over and over is improper setting or failure to replace the hydraulic auto tensioner. Next is seizure of one of the idler pulleys that wasn't replaced. If you did not compress the auto tensioner which should be replaced anyway and set the belt, it stretched slightly and the autotensioner which probably was not installed properly could not take out the slack. This causes the belt to jump and being an interference engine it bends valves. Now. Pull the Head, put in those stainless valves you have been drooling over. Go to VFAQ.com and download the PROPER procedure to timing belt installation. Follow it to the letter and you will enjoy many miles of carefree driving. Repeat every 60,000 miles. Also, replace the water pump as it's behind the belt and it's not all that expensive anyway. PS, don't say the car gives bad breaks. I know these engines and true they will bite you but only if you mis treat them. Give them the respect they deserve and they are a joy to behold. Trust me on this. PS. I doubt you will be replacing pistons if they only have dings. Lightly with a scour pad buff the dings to take out sharp edges which can cause pre-ignition/detonation. I've yet to have to replace a piston for valve tap dance.

Good Luck

"After stroking it, i get in in the other day and go to drive it" That was your first mistake! LOL/jk I agree with old mistu tech, just clean up the pistons and replace ALL of the timing components this time, and set them to the letter of the instructions and you should be fine!

Yeah i didn't even get to on it  . I replaced everything on the short block all new timing components, all genuine mitsubishi. I followed the vfaq instructions on changing the timing belt. The belt was taught all the way around, i'll try again and follow the instructions to a t. thanks for the insight

Ok i got the head off my car, and the good news is i only bent three vavles. Im gonna have a valve job done. My questions to the dsm wisemen is i have a 2g head that was rebuilt. Can i use the valves and retainers from that head on my 1g head. Im putting ss valves and bronze guides and new seals. And the other question is can i reuse my cometic hg it only has 300 miles on it. Or am i gonna half to get a new one. Thanks for the help

People have re-used metal head gaskets numerous times with great results, but as with anything, YMMV.

If you're getting SS valves, the stock 2G valves won't matter, and yes, the retainers will work.

WFT!! I had this Happen to me today. My car has been down since December. I just got everything I needed to run my rebuilt motor. I go to start it and it idles at 1,500 for 5 seconds then it made some funny noises and shut off. So, I try it one more time and it just started cussing at me ( it made some not so pleasant sounds). I have my girlfriend try to start it so I could see what it was and dang, what do you know?! The timing belt came loose.

Now, I only started the motor for 3 seconds at a time 3 times. So, how much damage am I looking at?

Tomarrow I am going to investigate the exactly how this happened.

Oh yeah, I did not build this motor. It was build by a buddy of mine name who came up with RRE. I put $3500+ into just this motor. Let me know what you guys think.
