This is driving me nuts! The car (97 tsi) came with an ebay block short shifter and it was horrible. After reading on here, people were saying the solution was to get a b&m (or clone), and use an oem level. So I purchased the clone and the oem lever, and also a new spring. It feels better, but theres still SO much movement side to side while in gear. Is this as good as it gets or what?

Have you bought new bushings for it?

Bushings for the point where it pivots? No -- I didnt think that would effect stiffness in horizontal movement... I'm assuming I guessed wrong?

Edit:::: I did change the under hood bushings to solid aluminum ones

Have you driven the car does it feel like it wont shift? Do that first I used a ebay one and I hated it junk, back to oem until i get a quality one. That's my take on it.

There is a bushing that goes at the bottom of the shifter. Looks like it is very worn or missing.

No it goes into gear solidly everything is good, but that side play is killing me! Im going to go out and check that bushing right now

Took it apart and these 2 bushings were in there. They still look good. If I hold the base and try to move the pivot spot where these bushings are, its solid.

I mean is there supoosed to be NO play in these things? I think the issue is im trying to compare itto the shifter in my vette, which doesnt use a linkage setup like these. Is there anyone who actually has almost no play while in gear? I can't remember if my other 2 dsms had this much play.

Look at the very bottom of the shifter. Not the shift lever, but the part that the lever bolts to. The tip of that piece fits Into a bushing that is in the lever that moves the shifter cable. 24594f on the pic.

The U shaped bushing that kind of slides on? Yupp mine is still there and fits in snug. That was one of the 1st things I checked :)
You cant tell from the video, but its not like the shifter is limp. Im not saying I can blow on it and itll move, its actually pretty tight. Im just not sure if the amount of side to side in general, even when applying force, is irregular or not

If that is tight than you likely have slack on the cable. Actually looking at the video again you can see the shifter cable moving when you have it in first and move the shifter. Look under the good whole someone is moving the shifter in gear like at,the end of the video. If it isnt moving on the other end than it is just a worn out cable.

Just checked and everything under the hood moves in sync with the shifter, so I dont think the cables are stretched, tho thinking about it -- it would make sense. From what I remember, 2gs are non adjustable, correct?

In the video when you put it in gear and moved the shifter left to right the cable moves in and out of the sheath. When you put the shifter in gear and move the shifter left to right does the cable move on the other end. That cable along with the linkage on the trans should not be able to move when it is in gear.

Under the hood the arm on the tranny does move, when in gear and I rock it side to side. I made a video (didnt have a partner to help) if its needed to see, but when I put it in gear the linkage and everything under the hood on the trans itself definitely moves. This is suggesting the linkage is stretched?

Is the arm just moving, or is the actual shaft that comes out of the trans moving in and out? If the arm on the trans is moving but it isn't moving the shift shaft in and out than it is likely the bushing on the trans linkage. There is a bushing on on the arm that moves the shaft in and out. If the shaft moves in and out than it is an internal trans issue.

In the video you can see what moves ---

Luv2rallye posted this then it disappeared, so I checked this at the same time http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/maintenance-repairs/376341-97-gs-t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.html#post152266167

The arm in the video just rocks (as you can see) -- when I went to check for that lever shoe I noticed I can pull the whole assembly that sits atop the shoe up and down maybe about half an inch. Is there a way I can check that shoe while its in the car? Or do I have to take everything apart to look at it/measure it? From the angle I shot the video, I couldnt see anything. The arm on the right is obviously the one in charge of side to side

EDIT:::

So it took me ~20 min outside in the dark and snow, but I got the lever off. Judging from the amount of rust (and the fact nothings there) Im assuming the shoe is long gone. Already ordered 2! Thanks for all the help guys! Ill update this when the new parts get in/installed.

So I ordered 2 of those lever shoes and they ignored my order -- then I ordered 2 more from a different site. Same thing -- I needed to move the car tomorrow to fab up an apexi/cat downpipe so I decided to make my own. I had ordered an ebay shifter and it came with those caps used to fit aftermarket shift knobs, and one was really close to fitting. So i heated up the metal nub the shoe goes on and slid the plastic over it until it fit. Then I melted the sides down until the piece measured the specs luv2rally listed in his link (I think it was ~.465"). Just installed it and we have this--- SUCCESS!!! Thanks guys

Ya I knew the measurement of that shoe (0.468") would help someone some day which is why I measured a new factory one and put it in my post http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/mai...t-fifth-gear-grinding-help.html#post152266167. So you're one of the many someones who found it! Glad it helped. You may want to replace your home made one with the real factory one someday as it is made of the proper nylon for least wear (as well as the proper dimensions). It's only $2.11 here (where I got it): Mitsubishi Parts - Mitsubishi Parts | OEM Mitsubishi Parts | Genuine Mitsubishi Parts. Should also be available at https://www.jnztuning.com/oempartscat.html and https://www.mitsubishiparts.com/oe_parts_catalog.html. You won't find it at auto stores or even most local dealers.
