I didn’t like how the surface was finishing, i could see lines from the printing process, and a couple low spots in the final color. I decided to get aggressive with the sanding - 120grit to take the surface down to the low spots.

I caused this! Powder-coat compressed, bolt gets loose, and backed out with vibration, ended up between a cam gear and the belt- poking a hole, carrying it to the back of the upper timing belt cover punching through the plastic, pulling all the way through the belt on exit - where it stayed.

Wow. So I guess we shouldn't powder coat those parts. Never occurred to me powder coat might affect bolt torque.

GT4 Race update (from April 10-11)

Friday's race win #10. We qualified P2. When you are running against a team with more resources - It's an additional challenge. We can't sticker up any time we like. We are trying to get the last bit of life out of the rubber we have, and our competition buys new shoes for every race. For context - We are on multi-heat cycle Hankooks, and the Porsche is running new Michelins that go for about $1000 a tire. Race 10, John got a good jump at the start, and made a pass on the first lap and stayed in the lead for the whole race.

Saturday race #11. We qualified P2, but we were 3 seconds off the pace. 3 seconds a lap... that just wasn't going to be competitive. We had a decision to make.

We have statistically wrapped up the Championship - We need to start the remaining races to keep the points, but we don't need to slay all the dragons to secure the win. We have a set of tires better than the set we qualified on - but we really don't know how much pace is left in them. We can conserve our equipment and save them for another day, or...

One thing that happened - During qualifying, I got an ear full at the pit wall from the Porsche team while I'm checking tire pressures from a hot lap. This is not a nice thing, as club members are not to engage with each other if there is a conflict. If you have a problem with another team - you go to the official. Don't walk up to me during a session and vent your issue. As it turns out - whatever his guy was annoyed about wasn't even a thing. It was so out of place to catch words from another team - it was confusing.

This impacted our tire choice. Conservative was out the window, and we put on the younger tires, and prepared for a battle.

And a battle it was. The Porsche pulled into the pre-grid with fresh scrubs that only had one heat cycle from qualifying. Yeah - they want it bad. John executed a clean start but did not get a jump ahead.

John stayed in the fight but the Porsche was pulling 0.4 sec a lap for the first three laps - then I saw their lap times plateau.

When our tires finally came up to temp, we were faster - and it was on.

It went like this:

After two overtake that didn't quite stick, (had to leave room to avoid contact) - this was the pass for the lead:

Super exciting - I extracted the video, and cut some 30min worth of beats into the render. I hope to share that video in the future.

A prime example of "it ain't over till it's over" - The last lap.
3 turns from the finish line, lapped traffic dude loses the rear and spins - epic patience and skill to stay out of the frey.
