just got the crank out my block-- everything looks clean and smooth for the most part EXCEPT for the rear main bearing... looks like some debris got caught in it... the gouge isnt THAT deep: id say .5mm deep or less. im taking my engine to the shop probably next week. They should be able to fix this correct?

also, i was going to buy all new bearings ahead of time and give them everything to assemble... should i wait and see what they say 1st? in case i need over-sized bearings or something of that nature?

thanx!

Don't buy bearings just yet. the crank might be good with a polish but then again it might not. you can get it turned but you have to know what kind of power you want to make.

That's not a journal, its just the rear main seal seat. If the rest of the crank is fine, that shouldn't be an issue. Either seat the rear main differently so the seal isn't seated in the groove, get it polished smooth, or get a repair sleeve.

+1 on the bearings, Do not buy New Bearings until you have that crank turned/polished. I custom ordered bearings for my recent build and it was .20 over ended up having to exchange the first crank that was sent to me and the bearings due to being a special size order was non refundable. $120 down the hole! :(

Have them polish it first and see what its like. If you can catch your fingernail on the grooves then you will have to decide to have it turned down or just replace it. Now the rear main seal groove you may have to polish it down and/or use a speedy sleeve.

i was ORIGINALLY going to rebuild everything myself, but now i feel like im stepping out of my league. i went to school for auto tech and elso mechanical engineering and now run a shop, so i know what im doing when it comes to most stuff, but this is going to be my first rebuild and dont want to buy all new internals and ruin everything on the first start up... seeing my background, would you say im fully capable of reassembling the engine myself?

once everything is bored and polished im scared i wont know/remember what to measure and the specs :(

as far as power, im going to be looking at 500hp or more with a hx40

Just get a chiltons manual or Haynes and almost all the specs are in there. I never went to school for auto along with alot of other mechanical type people and here we are. Do you have or have access to the right tools? The know how and confidence to do it? If yes then yeah. Do your research and when you have questions just hop on here.

What do you mean you run a shop?

i have too many tools to count LOL. im confident i can do it but im scared to buy new pistons rods engine work etc-- and then measure the rod bearing clearance wrong and screw the whole block up... not only the money but the time it would take to rip everything apart again.

run a shop meaning im a shop foreman/service writer and also do body work. none of the guys there do internal engine repair (we send that stuff out to machine shops) so i cant really get advice from there.

saving $350 on a small block assembly sounds good though. the only reason i considered it is for peace of mind :toobad:

Really all you need is to keep things clean and ask questions when you don't know....sometimes the questions will have to be answered by reading on here or looking for specs in books to keep from getting flamed.
Yeah saving money is good but then again you could get a shortblock and head from a respectable vendor and have some insurance or peice of mind. Either way you will end up putting in wrench time or pay someone to do it for you. Really its all up to you. If you do it yourself you can get a shirt that says "warning engine may explode! I tuned this shat myself" LOL
Good luck with it. btw I did see a nice SBR head for less than $1000 in the classifieds. That might be an option as well.

LOL-- sounds about right LOL...

but yeah, im going to go to the machine shop on Wednesday to see what kind of prices were talking about... if its only like a $200 difference then i may have them do it. im leaning toward doing it myself though. well see!! :sneaky:
