Hey everyone, I recently purchased a MLS Cometic Headgasket, but noticed a slight defect before install. I was not overly concerned until I inspected the gasket after installation.

In the pictures the red circle is the defective area. As you can see after the install the defective area is not sitting flat like the other areas.

My main questions are:

1) Would you run this gasket or get a replacement?

2) The head and block were machined. The head was torqued to 90lft lbs. If I remove the headgasket will both surfaces (head/block) still be suitable to use a new MLS Headgasket?

FYI: The engine was never run.

If that’s just the rivet holding the layers together, then no issue. Call Cometic to confirm if you can’t sleep at night. An interesting note, the cometic mls gasket can be removed and reused so long as the engine was never started.

For future reference for anyone that has the same issue. I ended up calling Cometic and they insisted that I do not use the head gasket and a refund was issued.

I use Cometic and haven't seen that issue yet but I am building another motor so I'll see.

I see they issued a refund. I would have said it possibly could have been ok but would have changed it.
We keep our old MLS gaskets and back ups just in case. I will also say long as block and head was machined to correct RA you can just put another mls in and go without issue.
Personally we just clean up the surface and have never had a issue. This is when its refresh time for a motor i built and i know the surface finish is correct and there was never a issue with head gasket sealing. I just order another same MLS and have never had a issue.

Put it on the "wall of fame" and get another or use a different brand. Every Cometic HG I've used has been fine. Maybe it wasn't stamped right or, you didn't have it upside-down did you?
You can see the tangs of the MLS gasket on this motor.
You could put on a composite gasket, a different brand (I have also used HKS), or go back with a Cometic HG. You have choices.

I went with HKS and called it a day.

I have enough parts from this build that go up on "The Wall of Shame". I'm out of room...Ha

It's for sale here only if someone wants it. I'm not going to post a separate ad anywhere else.

I was happy with my HKS. Good choice.

Cool...Then I will sell it to you for dirt cheap, and you can use it. Deal?
I don't need a gasket, but smartass snarky response does not change the fact that there is nothing wrong with that gasket in terms of its purpose. I also prefer Mitsubishi MLS gaskets....but thanks for the offer. :thumb:

I happen to need a HG. What do you want for it? You got refunded so what is the dirt cheap price for my dirt cheap build for my latest project car, Old Grey?

$45 shipped and it's yours. It's in the original packaging. More than half off, and a special discount for helping everyone out on here. Let me know if you're interested.
