Ask Me,
Virginia
I recently went to remove my exhaust manifold studs on my 6 bolt head. One of the studs that broke was the middle one that goes into the oil drain part of the head.
I made the decision to drill out a larger hole and then tap it for a 12m 1.75 bolt or stud.
I went to Lowes and found an 8.8 12mx1.75 bolt and used it since studs of this size are not very available.
After putting it in, I realized the stud protrudes into the head.
I really don't know much about the head design or cylinders heads in general so I have a few questions:
1) Will the fact that the end of the bolt protrudes cost me power in some way?
2) Will the fact that the end of the bolt protrudes cause slower oil drainage? Would that matter?
3) Where exactly does the "hole" that the stud goes into actually go? It is my understanding that it goes into the oil pan. I want to know a bit more about this because there are metal shavings that dropped down this hole due to tapping/drilling etc. (The old stud is not in there luckily). I made the decision not to pull the head when I did this.
Thank you for all of this.
