Is an engine hoist required for clutch change?

Toronto,
I'm doing a clutch job with a more experienced friend and would like to get the materials ready for him.
I was wondering if its required to have an engine hoist. I read a guide that makes no mention of it. Also they support the transmission with a block of wood and a hydraulic car jack instead of a transmission jack.

Thanks!

I support the engine with one jack. I put the jack under the oil pan (obviously using a block of wood and cardboard so you don't dent the pan) so I can raise and lower the engine independently of the transmission. I use a transmission jack (actually I used a motorcycle jack, but close enough to work great) for the transmission. Having two jacks like this makes it pretty easy to lower/raise the trans and engine to get them to mate up correctly.

I was wondering, how thick is the oilpan that it can be used as a jacking point for the engine?

Not thick enough to JUST use a jack. But if you use a block of wood to distribute the weight, you won't dent the pan.

An engine hoist is not needed, but it could make it a little easier. I've always used a jack and a piece of wood to support the engine while doing the clutch job and haven't had a problem. Its up to you :)

I def would not let it hang there by one mount. Just a jack with a piece of wood will work wonders, and you can lower and raise it as needed. As for the trans I just put it on my stomach and start benching it! Ha its not too bad but its nice to have another person helping you.

Its just one motor mount off, you can let it hang I did, but definately a 2 person job to take out the tranny.. we tied it with a rope through the top and slowly took out the last bolts from the top of the tranny.. does that make me a redneck? i hope notROFL
