Intercooler limits?

Hello,

I've been searching around and got all of my pieces for my upgrade, but I don't feel like comfortable spending ~360 on a PR front mount. I'm going to an evo 3 16g with all supporting. Will the sidemount be sufficient for a while? At what hp/boost should I stay while on the side mount?

16g is not very efficient with a sidemount. Just get one from a parted out car if you really cant afford one. Maybe hit up @Stangmurdera or the classifieds on this site.

I got an OBX kit for $120 used, its not a 500hp intercooler or anything but for a 16g it's fine. I just changed the way the piping ran so it's like a shortroute because the old piping melted in a fire (also the original way was stupid)

I had a sidemount with my E316g and would pull decent but I felt like it was holding back power, bought a punishment racing FMIC and the power is very different! I felt like the stock sidemount would heat soak after a few pulls

It will be fine so long as you keep the boost relatively stock. Just save up for what you want. A 16g will be fine at higher than stock boost levels on a side mount, just not the stock side mount. If you decide on a used one, just get it pressure tested to ensure no leaks. $350 is not expensive t all for an fmic kit.

FMIC should come before upgrading turbo but I personally would not run a sidemount with a 16g. Will it cause your car to blow up? Not at all.
Will it hold you back considerably? Absolutely.

Best answer right there haha I remember heat soaking the sidemount at 14-15psi on a stock t25.

Supra sidemounts are a popular alternative if you dont want to spend the money for a legit front mount.

im not sure if you have a facebook, but there are dsm pages on fb where people sell parts dirt cheap. honestly, it doesnt matter what front mount you go with if youre running a 16g, you wont be building crazy amounts of boost to worry about welds breaking, however one thing to consider is that with a fmic youll have more lag, and itll take more to fill the fmic up, so just keep that in mind. big front mounts look cool but id rather have efficiency than looks. find a front mount in your price range with 2.5'' inlet and outlets that isnt too big so you wont have issues with lag. as for the side mount, you could keep the stock side mount, but the more flow youre making the less time the intake gasses will sit in the core causing heat soak, and higher iats will cause a parasitic draw of power. so either a modded supra side mount or an apropriate sized fmic will be sufficient. i recomend a bar/plate design intercooler, as they will allow for better cooling and optimal flow to prevent the radiator from being starved of airflow.
