I just had my timing belt changed. When I went to pick it up the mechanic started telling me what he found. First the cam gears were off like 2 or 3 notches (Dont know how that didnt bend the valves) so he got on mitsubishi tech support and they couldn't believe it either. Then the oil pump sprocket. There is a hole in the back of the block that you take the bolt out of and stick a screwdriver up. If it fits in then the sprocket is on right. But it wouldn't fit up there so he turne it around 180 degrees and if was fine. So it was on 180 backwards. He said this would cause vibration at high rpms. Which there was but I thought that it might just be like cv joints or somthing like that. Im really glad that I got that done when I did. Its a big relief now.

The same idiots who will not take the time to do the job right because it takes more time (or if your a dealer mechanic because you will lose your job not completing x cars per day - so screw doing it right which takes extra time).

Exactly - a well known documented fact all you nieve people (just ask any ex-mechanic): Dealership mechanics will loose their job not fixing x cars per week - so they must do it fast - not well. They ARE trained in how to do it right, however - they just won't do that if it takes extra time (which it always does). So not all the bolts are tightened, extra items he replaced that were not the problem (trial and error) get left in and charged for, if he can't figure out the problem he will just replace stuff anyway and declare it fixed, if the fix costs too little $ he will replace something else to make a more normal profit, etc, etc, etc. People think this will cost the dealer reputation and customer loss. The truth is they have so many cars to fix nowadays that they are swamped and could care less if you come back (and prefer you don't).

Not true around here.

The idiots who did mine were the Mitsubishi dealership, where the previous owner had taken it. Guess who'll never see my car again?

Im wondering if it wasn't the mitsubishi dealer that did it. Because the guy I bought it from bought it off the first owner in Des Moines. And the guy I bought it off never changed the timing belt. So it would have to be the guy in Des Moines that did and just took it to the mitsubishi dealer up there.(it looked like dealership work) Also the the bottom timing belt cover was cracked and it looked like someone glued it back together. Im with Defiant my car is never going to a dealership.
