I got bored and made a subframe.

I have no type of degree, not even graduated highschool, Im just a Dish Network tech, but never fails to crack me up when I go to big homes and the first thing the customer say is, " Im an engenieer in blah blah blah" with such arroganace that all I can do is let them hang them selves cus they dont know crap about what I am there to do. After I fix the problem their arrogance is such that all they can do is be rude! never fails!
DSMORNOTHING, I wish I could do 1/4 of wht you do, hell, I wish I had the knowldege to even think about building something, Keep up the good work and keep us posted please!

Boosted98GSX is a tool. He tried telling me that welding the 4th brace for the 4th mount on the rear diff for 2g's would fail from harmonics. There's about 20 of my units on cars driving around and not a single failure yet. They've been on my car since May 2010 and I've put around 30,000 miles on my car.

I would also like to add that the factory subframe is welded together. This is the front though.

I wouldn't wreck it, but as stiff as that sucker is going to be, I would be happy to put 100k or so on one. I prefer a hyper responsive car, and I am pretty sure that will fit the bill.

I design a lot of subframe and suspension components and that is just a small percentage of what I do for future Ford, Nissan, Benteler, Cummins, etc. Production components for future auto's the reason this would never go on a production car is cost in design and the process in which this is made in mass production. It's much easier and more cost effective to stamp and roll a subframe in a press @ a volume of 20/minute than a weld cell @ a volume of 1/10 minutes.

The only way to test would be a computer simulation and data analysis, or realtime physical testing. You'll never know until he throws it on his car and puts a 100,000 mile simulation on his car. I would not sign this off for daily driving if it were on my desk though, at least until the proper measures were taken to study wear analysis, weld strength, weld engineer signoff, tooling engineer signoff, quality engineer signoff, design engineer signoff, gaging technician signoff, and lastly customer approval.

I would however throw it on my car it sees the track only

But what do I know, all I do is keep a nuclear reactor operating underwater completely silently on what could arguably be called the most complicated piece of machinery ever assembled. I agree and can see the need for that measure of safety with parts going to the general public. Those parts must be made for the person that knows nothing about their car except how to turn it on, step on the pedals, and steer. They're going to be neglected, and if it were to fail due to that and kill people, you won't be making cars or parts for long.
This is the other end of the spectrum though. I think the majority of us know our car well, what it is mechanically capable of, and what we are capable of driving. I know for a fact that if I were to let someone like my mother drive my car, she would wreck it immediately. The clutch would grab, she'd be slow off the gas, and probably would launch it into my neighbor's yard before she knew what happened. I drive it every day, no problems because I built it and know what to expect. Same goes for a subframe like this. It will not ever be a mass production piece. The people than know what it is will know what to do with it and what the risk of using it could be. I wouldn't say it would warrent the same attention as something like a control arm in a Ford Taurus. The user of something like this would likely be inspecting it frequently for any signs of failure and repairing it before it happened, unlike the general public.

We offer a good warranty on our stuff as far as welds holding up. So for someone to not inspect this it would be stupid. Its like anything out there that gets beat on enough it is GOING to break eventually. You cannot expect it to hold forever. Its part of the reason my tube chassis will have to be re certified every 3 years. But as far as the subframe goes, personally I will be rocking one on my GSX that will see 800 wheel and be driven on the streets. Should you drive it on the streets? I say no but in the end it is all your decision. Also it looks as if we may be building these in ONLY mild steel as yes chromo can fail. We will still offer Chromo as an option for those who understand what CAN happen.

Actually front subframe jig is being built soon! And yes I am sure a provision could be made to allow for RWD.

Just out of curiosity, what would be the advantage of using chromo over mild steel? Added stiffness? I would think mild steel would be a better choice anyhow, and the difference in flex would be negligible vs the durability issues. Besides, how much more reinforcing would anyone need?? That looks like drag car equipment, and most people aren't running 800+ hp motors that would even stress something like that.

In the future, I would suggest that people who want to chime in on a subject throw out simple questions and suggestions about the design without making claims. Same goes for the person posting their work. Instead of saying "I can break that like a twig" it might be more constructive for all if you simply asked how the piece will be tested, suggesting that one section doesn't look like it will hold up to real world forces. And instead of saying "it will hold up to all you can throw at it" I'd think you'd be better served to let everyone know you'll be doing extensive load testing.

It seems like most people have the best intentions, but when you start making statements that are certain to put others on the defense, expect the discussion to go downhill. Let's just avoid talking down to others or making sharp statements and/or accusations.

You will be able to use stock control arms if you choose too but we will be building Poly bushing adjustable control arms to sell with the subframe! And sway bar is an option if you so choose to use one as well! Whatever YOU as the customer wants done we will do!
