How to program a Keyless Remote [Merged 5-7] fob reprogram programming alarm buttons

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

It might need to be reprogramed. You can find out how by searching the treads. Good luck with that.

To reprogram your keyless entry system for a new key fob:
1) Turn ignition to OFF.
2) Ground pin 1 of the Data Link Connector (black 16-pin connector under dash driver's side). Pin 4 of this connector is a ground, so placing a jumper wire between pins 1 & 4 will accomplish this. Grounding pin 1 tells the system you are getting ready to reprogram it.
3) Close all the doors.
4) Turn the key to ACC, then back to OFF. The power locks will lock/unlock. The system is now ready to be programmed.
5) Press a button on your key fob.
6) If you have two key fobs, press a button on the second fob within 1 minute of pressing a button on the first one. Both must be programmed at the same time. If you only have one remote, press a button on it 2 more times to signal that you only have one.
7) The doors will lock/unlock to signal that the codes were received.
8) Remove the connection between pins 1 & 4.

i had a hard time with the remote also. you have to push the buttons really hard and for like 2-3 seconds for each of the 3 times. Don't know if thats the problem but maybe!

I bought a 97 GSX and it didn't come with any remotes. I just read that if I have a green security light then my car came with keyless entry...and I know about jumping pins 1 and 4, so I'm going to try that. My question is, does it matter what kind of remote I get? Can I get a cheapo from autozone or does it have to be OEM? Would this work?

the thought of having keyless entry makes my day!(haven't had it on any of my cars before)

I bought two from e-bay, and both worked... however the one you are looking at is the wrong one... This is what you need

I had to buy two of them, but because lost the first one... Both worked great and are easily programed...

EDIT: Just incase you need it again

Go by the FCC ID number. GQ43VT6T
Also, Talon remotes didn't have the Panic button, although the circuit board has the contacts for it, and it works when those contacts are closed.

Thanks, I bought one off ebay for like $40. It has the panic button...same code though, the GQ4VT6T. I can't wait until it comes!!

Defiant, sorry to bring this back up, but I did a search on "keyless" and "Factory alarm", I did this already, before I made this thread and posted my results. I recently installed an aftermarket alarm on my other GSX and having keyless on there made me want to try again to figure out why my programming did not work.

Since the install of the aftermarket on the other GSX, it gave me a better idea of the factory wiring. I looked at the other GSX which I had problems programming the a new remote for, since the previous owner seemed to have put in an aftermarket alarm, which I already removed. I checked the wiring again to see if I may have forgot something. The wiring doesn't seem messed up.

My factory alarm does work, it arms when locked from inside, and goes off when you do whatever has to be done to make it go off.

Now, after rereading the threads about programming a keyfob, the first time around, I thought the pins that we were dealing with are the ones ON the keyless entry box harness which is located on the behind driver side rear quarter interior panel next to the 6x9 speaker, THAT IS WHAT I DID WHEN I MADE THIS THREAD, which obviously wasn't successful. Now after various readings of the posts I probably read the first time, it says "BLACK 16pin DATA LINK CONNECTOR UNDER THE DASH" Perhaps this is why I didn't get it to program? I do have the right keyfob, as it is the extra one from my uncle's 98 GS-T. (Factory alarm as well with the 3 buttons).

I have been under the dash many times, the only obvious plug I see is the OBDII plug? Is this what the "16pin DATA LINK CONNECTOR" is? If not, is there a picture of this thing?

Thanks.

Looks like Defiant went to sleep when I made this post :)

Anyways I did a search and the OBDII plug/port = 16pin Data Link Connector!!!!

Stupid me, I always just know that as the OBDII port, and never the Data Link Connector.

That is why it probably wasn't programming, I was doing the pin trick on the actual keyless remote box by the 6x9!! I hope I didn't damage anything the first time I tried to do that.

I will try again tomorrow, this time on the "OBD-II port"!! haha.

EDIT, all the guides, walkthroughs, etc say "16pin BLACK data link connector", this probably also confused me, as my OBD-II port is grey, but 16pin as well.

Hope someone can verify this by the time I wake up, so I don't mess anything up. :)

Hey guys, I was hanging out with two other DSMers when a question came into my head. I didn't always know that my car had the factory alarma system until I installed new door switches in my car, the stock ones never worked. These kids I was hanging with both had the stock alarm system and theirs came with a keyless entry remote. Did all dsm's with an alarm system have the remote? Because if so I'll go to the dealer and have one made.

Well, I went to Mitsubishi and they insisted that they couldn't do it and that Chrysler has to do it. I know they can do it to, but whatever. I called Chrysler and they looked up my VIN and it should have a remote. They ordered one for me and I'm going on Thursday to get it and they're going to program it for me. The remote costs like $100 and the programming costs $50.

Expensive item:( And it turned especially useless when the following month I upgraded my alarm system and didn't need it anymore
Sell your remote to one of these guys who need it.

I don't know if the transmitter and receiver were the same in all years of 2Gs but you should be able to use it across the board in the same year. From the service manual it looks like the programming of the receiver for a new transmitter is pretty easy once you realize that they are using the MUTT just to ground pin 1 on the ODB2 DLC.

Steve

You are correct Steve. It is a pretty easy DIY process. I would not pay someone $50 to do something I can just as easily do.

Luckily my car came with keyless entry and alarm system. Keyless entry is one option i cant live without. But it turned out that both are kinda useless. For starters, my keyless entry will only work when im standing right next to the car, which is pointless considering i can use the key while standing next to the car also. I've changed batteries in the remote 3 times and still cant get a decient range. On top of that, only the open door button works. Both the lock and panic buttons dont work. And as for the stock alarm system... it sucks. I only realized i had one when i tried to reach inside my car through the window to unlock it. I have never been able to get the alarm to go off any other way. Also, for some reason the alarm doesnt turn off when you turn the car on, which is unlike most of the other cars ive used. So, i have to open up the hood and disconnect the battery to shut it off. In my opinion, both of those options suck and arent worth following. Not sure if its just my car or if this is a problem for other people. I suggest to go aftermarket for keyless entry and alarm systems. I have a viper alarm system on my porsche and it works great. I have at least a 35 foot range on the remote.

Yea I would not get a remote from the dealer if they are going to charge you $100 for the remote and $50 to program it.

You can program it for free and easy. Do a search on "alarm" and you will see the MANY MANY MANY threads regarding this situation.

Personally, even $50 is too much, I just bought an aftermarket alarm on ebay for $30, and installed it with the help of my friend. It's way better than the factory alarm, easier to make it work with a turbo timer, and cheaper than getting the remote both used/new.

If you know someone who is willing to part with their extra one for free, even better. I was fortunate that I knew someone who just let me have theirs.

So I can speak from both perspective, one of my 95 GSXs has factory alarm installed, but I didn't have the remote when I bought it from previous owner, got one and programmed it, then my other 95 GSX which I just decided to buy a new alarm.

If you are confident about your 12volt car electronic installations, you might want to consider getting an aftermarket alarm that is better in every way than the factory alarm.

Good luck!

My service manual doesn't have it..
Then you don't have a factory service manual and your missing quite a bit more than just this!

2G METHOD OF REGISTERING A SECRET CODE
Each individual secret code is registered inside the transmitter, and so it is necessary to register these codes with the received in the following cases.
  • When either the transmitter or receiver is replaced;
  • If a second transmitter is to be used;
  • If it appears that a problem is occurring because of faulty registration of a code.
A maximum of two different codes per transmitter can be stored in the memory area of the EEPROM, and up to two different transmitters can be used. When the codes for the first transmitter are registered, the previously-registered codes for both transmitters are cleared. Therefore, if you are using two transmitters or are adding a second transmitter, the codes for both transmitters must be registered'at the same time.
  1. Check that the door locking function works normally using the door key.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
NOTE This grounds the data link connector (OBD II) Pin No. 1 and gets ready for a code registration.
Caution Turn the ignition switch to OFF before connecting or disconnecting the scan tool.
  3. Close all doors.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to ACC and return it to OFF.
NOTE This locks and unlocks the door once, and then a code can be registered.
  5. After pressing any switch on the transmitter once, press it two more times within 10 seconds to register the same code for SET I and SET II.
  6. After registration is completed, the doors will automatically be locked and unlocked once.
  7. If you are using two transmitters or have added a second transmitter, the same registration procedure should be carried out for the second transmitter, and it should be carried out within one minute after registration of the codes for the first transmitter has been completed. After the second registration is completed, the doors will automatically be locked and unlocked once.
  8. Registration mode finishes under the following conditions.
    • Registration of two transmitter codes are completed.
    • One minute has passed since the registration mode setting.
    • Scan tool is disconnected. (ground released on OBD II DLC.)
    • Ignition switch is turned ON.
    • Any of the doors are opened.

I had the same problem with my 98 GS-T. Except I dont know if the guy I had doing it was a tard or the kid I bought that car from was a hack. The guy said I didnt have a transmitter, so the FOB wouldnt work. It was dirt cheap like $45 for the FOB and to get it installed and I was pissed. Anyone ever have this problem? Where should I look to see if I have one?

The little key fob is the transmitter. The receiver is in the car but I can't tell from the drawings which side it's on under the inside body skins.

On the back of the transmitter there should be a FCC ID and some other data. If people will post their information and which car (year and model) then it will be clear what goes with which and those missing them will know what to look for on eBay.

They are. Just one FCC ID number.

The remote brain is under the plastic trim on the driver's side, the same piece of plastic that covers the left rear speaker. It's just above the floor and just behind the door jamb.

Hi guys, got a 98 GST with factory security/alarm, but i do not have the remote for it. When alarm goes off, gotta always turn it off by unlocking/locking the drivers side door. How do i go about obtaining one now? Any ideas?

Thanks

I c/p this from another site . . .

Get a working key fob off ebay or somewhere & program it like this:

To reprogram your keyless entry system for a new key fob:
1) Turn ignition to OFF.
2) Ground pin 1 of the Data Link Connector (black 16-pin connector under
dash driver's side). Pin 4 of this connector is a ground, so placing a
jumper wire between pins 1 & 4 will accomplish this. Grounding pin 1
tells the system you are getting ready to reprogram it.
3) Close all the doors.
4) Turn the key to ACC, then back to OFF. The power locks will
lock/unlock. The system is now ready to be programmed.
5) Press a button on your key fob 3 times.
6) The doors will lock/unlock to signal that the codes were received.
7) If you have two key fobs, press a button on the second fob within 1
minute of pressing a button on the first one 3 times. Both must be programmed at
the same time.
8) The doors will lock/unlock to signal that the codes were received.
9) Remove the connection between pins 1 & 4.
