how to know what 7 bolt i have

my car is a 99 but I bought it as a reconstructed title and I think the owner before swapped to a different 7 bolt. I have the engine out and stuff but how can I tell if it is a 99 7bolt or an early 96 or so 7 bolt?

Check the thrust bearing if you are planning on taking it apart. The pre 98 blocks have a one piece thrust bearing.

Why would it matter?

The late 2g 7 bolts have a split thrust bearing and different crank girdles. Or alteast I know the 2g 7 bolt girdle is different from the 1g 7 bolt girdle.

What is the vin# on the engine block? If it is the same as the door jam, and dash plate then it is the original. If it's different, pm me and i can look it up for you.

Do you have the oil pan off?
This is a flanged thrust bearing 7-bolt.

That's the serial number. There should also be a VIN for the car it came out of.

On my 6bolt the vin is stamped very small digits on the block.
As you look from the front of the car, it would be on the left side of the block towards the rear(transmission side)

If you took it all apart you should have been able to notice if your had the split thrust washer design shown in Strm Trpr post. Take pictures of the middle bearing/washer.

I believe you can tell from the engine stamp as well. So maybe post that up and someone else might know. The VIN can be found above the bellhousing.

Yes, the 99 block has the two separate washers on the middle bearing, 3 separate pieces (washer, bearing, washer)... If not, your middle bearing would look like the ones shown in this picture at the end. Which is not the split thurst bearing.

Did you look in the spot posted above? Transmission side, top, behind the freeze plug?
