Check the thrust bearing if you are planning on taking it apart. The pre 98 blocks have a one piece thrust bearing.
 
Do you have the oil pan off?
This is a flanged thrust bearing 7-bolt.

On my 6bolt the vin is stamped very small digits on the block.
As you look from the front of the car, it would be on the left side of the block towards the rear(transmission side)

If you took it all apart you should have been able to notice if your had the split thrust washer design shown in Strm Trpr post. Take pictures of the middle bearing/washer.

I believe you can tell from the engine stamp as well. So maybe post that up and someone else might know. The VIN can be found above the bellhousing.

Just noticed you posted the engine stamp, trying to find where I had read about the engine stamp

Yes, the 99 block has the two separate washers on the middle bearing, 3 separate pieces (washer, bearing, washer)... If not, your middle bearing would look like the ones shown in this picture at the end. Which is not the split thurst bearing.
