how would i go about cleaning out the stud holes on my block. I"m changing the head gasket and when i took the studs out a bunch of oil got down into the stud holes. now would compressed air suffice or should i use something else also? thanks

Air would do quite well. Once you get the majority of the oil out you could also spray in some carb cleaner (to help remove the oil) and let it sit a few minutes the use air to blow that out as well.

also a good habit to do anytime you pull a headstud out is to run a tap down there just to be sure you didn't leave any extra surprise's for later :)

And to ensure you are not getting any extra resistance that would throw off your torque specs

Use Carb Cleaner or Starting Fluid to dissolve the oil, blow as much as you can out with compressed air, and as Chris stated above, be sure to clean the threads in the block with a tap to be sure the threads are flawless as any imperfection can give you an improper torque reading.

^^If you don't have a tap/chase, you can use the bolt that's suppose to go there, or stud with some oil on it until it meets resistance, back it out, clean it off - repeat until it goes all the way in smoothly.

I copied this from BogusSVO:

make sure you clean the bolt holes in the block well, brake clean and compressed air, DO NOT CHASE THE THREADS WITH A TAP!!, a tap will cut/thin the treads in the block and weaken them.
the best way to clean is to take an old head bolt, and take a cut off wheel and groove the bolt longways across the threads.

I wouldn't chase it with a tap. Like posted it can remove material that may not need to be removed. And the cross notch on the bolt works excellently.
