MAKE SURE THE CAR IS OFF.
Take off the intake section that goes to the turbo.
Stick your hand in the turbo.
Try to move that fin around in and out or up and down and see if it moves at all.
If it moves alot you got issues, if ot dosent move alot you got no problems.

Also if when you boost and let off you start blowing out oil it's another sign your seals in the turbo are going usually.

Along with what he said. Make sure it spins freely. Dont want a seized turbo either.

Don't touch the fins themselves-- just grip the nut/shaft in the center and try to wiggle it in/out and up/down.

2nd that. this is due to the turbo being a scroll double bearing something something turbo. my brand new evo III b16g came with very slight side to side..

how much side to side play is normal for a 14b? I have one sitting here thats going on very soon, and seems to have a bit of play, i'd say a few mm. is that normal?

Is it tapping the walls of the housing?
If so then get another turbo. If not then do you have enough room to slide a sheet of paper into there? How many sheets?

when i get a little side to side play, i held the compressor wheel closely to the comperssor housing. I could only get 2 sheets of notebook paper between the wheel and the housing. I'm going to take a guess and say that its a little too close for comfort.

Guess i'll go shopping for another 14b.
