1G How much fluid in a 4 bolt LSD? How about a 3 bolt LSD?

Ask Me, Virginia
I ask this because when I went to change the fluid on my 3 bolt LSD/GVR4, it took me 3 quarts of redline heavyweight shockproof before fluid started running out of the fill plug!! Expensive as heck!

The VFAQ cites .9 quarts. How was this possible?

I'd like to do the same for my 1g/4 bolt LSD, but I'd like to get this right the first time.

I want to make sure that I get my order right since Redline is not available locally for me.

Thanks for any input.

Sounds like you filled the transmission...(3 quarts). The rear diff takes 1 quart.

Lol, nope....I am talking about the 3 bolt LSD. It was an awful and expensive experience putting 3 quarts of heavyweight shockproof in that rear.

Hope not to experience this on the 4 bolt LSD.

No I wasn't drunk either. :)

The fluid capacity of a 1g rear diff (whether 3-bolt or 4) is something less than one quart. Mitsu lists it as .74 qts. Either you don't have a stock rear diff or something odd is going on.

Something is up, not sure what it could have been! Not really fond of the way the 3 bolt in my GVR4 sounds after doing that either.

Fortunately, it is not my daily.

This type of thing happens to me fairly often. I have a 3rd generation Caravan AWD. The tranny is supposed to hold 5 quarts after a drain but I can get it to hold 6.5 quarts after a drain by meticulously following the same procedure.

At least no one here is yelling at me and calling me a liar YET like they did in that community. :)

It only takes 1qt max. Something isnt right. Even if you filled it with the rear end jacked up it shouldnt take that much. I would drain it and put the proper amount it. On level ground it will spill out with over a qt in it.

So strange guys. Was on a pretty level surface. Didn't spill out until that 3rd quart. I plan to swap out the DSM and GVR4 rears eventually so I'll probably just drain and reuse that heavyweight on the 4 bolt at that time since it doesn't have many miles on it.
