How fast in 3rd gear???

i got a 98 eclipse rs with a couple of mods done here and there. Just wonderin if being able to go about 105 mph in 3rd before havin to shift into 4th is pretty good? please respond...

crazy. if i remember right my gsx tops out around ~90-95 in third.

GSX has the shorter gear ratios than a non-turbo.

Mods won't matter. It's a solid connection between the crank and the rear wheels, and until wind resistance enters into it (and DSMs are amongst the more slippery cars out there), your only limit will be crankshaft RPM.

How tight are you winding it?

Yeah if I remeber, the top of 3rd in my 95 non-turbo GS is around 95...that is very odd that you are able to get almost an extra 10 MPH out of that gear.

I can get 105 out of Daisy at around 7500rpm. I always get a kick out of shifting up into 4th to compression brake back down to a decent speed.

I had an AFX/R ECU in her for the better part of last year. I just traded it for a futon, since the Megasuirt I'm installing in a couple weeks will take care of all that fuel/spark stuff for me. With the AFX unit, I would get ignition cut at about 7800rpm. That was pretty cool to be pushing 105mph in third and go into a sort of stutterbox mode. Pretty sure fuel cut on the AFX is 8300rpm or so. With the MSnS, I'm building for a 9,000rpm redline. Block will be fully balanced and I'm going to look into some custom cams from Crower that won't run out of steam at that end; something with big lift and a decent amount of duration. It will be fun...

And the head is already built to handle these speeds, btw.

mine is a 96 rs and it has a race series magnaflow exhaust and a proflow air filter that sucks and im also doing 105 in 3rd but the rs model is also the lightest model too so you have to think about that too.

no you dont, gear ratio's are gear ratio's, weights not gonna affect it, its just gonna affect how fast you get to that speed

ive been to my max speed in 4th and didnt even need 5th.. what you need to do is look at the no speeding signs and speed limit signs and see if you can do that in 3rd.... :laugh:

For what I have done to the car in trying to push the envelope of all motor tuning a stock displacement 420A, I will be tracking and dynoing it before the turbo goes on this summer. There are a lot of people out there waiting to see what I manage to pull off before I boost her. Building an all motor 2GNT has been an invaluable learning experience for making real power with a turbo someday.

no i was responding to the last part of your post saying you have to think about weight too... you dont have to think about weight, im sure you can do 105 in 3rd.

101MPH at the top of 3rd gear, But man my motor is screemin for me to shift, around 6700RPMS, I had my boost level set at daily driving 10psi and by the top of 3rd it had crept up to about 14psi I was paying to much attention to the damn road...deer are a pitta around here.
