so just recently my 3rd gear pops out of gear. if i drive the car nice and easy nothing happens, but as soon as i wanna give it some power it pops out. this doesnt happen all the time, but then again im not always pushing the car.

ANY HELP......

you need new slider, 3rd gear, possibly a new synchro from the damage of popping out.

I have lots of parts to show you what happens and why but i am about 2 hours south of you.

Low trans fluid will not cause the gear to pop out. Low fluid will cause the synchros to fail, low enough will cause the bearings to fail. The Dog teeth are shaped like a trapeziod so that when the slider makes contact the teeth mesh and the pressure placed on the gear by load holds the two pieces together. When the dog teeth round over from work dogs or abuse, the gear will pop out. Within the next year or two, your 3rd gear will no longer stay engaged.

Now in traffic if your gear pops out as you are on and off the gas lightly then you are looking at worn dogs. Dogs and dog teeth are different. The problem with that is the dog teeth become worn very fast and you end up replacing the gear anyway.

If you cant find a cost effective solution, send me a PM. I have the spare parts to correct this and the 3rd gear only takes about 1 hour to replace and clean.

oh cause my dad was a tech for chrysler and he was driving a 5 spd pt cruiser and it was popping out of fifth gear ( i was also in the car) and i found out there want enough fluid in the trans , so that was just from one of my experiences. also if hes going to replace a gear he will have to drain it do he may as well check to see if its full. just my .02, good luck tho

I'm sure that poor Cruiser is going to be back at the shop in short order.

Ones title does not equal ones experience. I know many dealer techs, one of which is a master tech for chrysler or was till he opened his own shop. All you need to do is take apart a trans, I can even do it for you and you tell me how the fluid hold the trans in gear. Truth is is doesnt and your father cannot explain that. Basic physics is enough to explain that one. Your father added fluid which was a temp fix. The dog teeth are worn bottom line. If that upsets you then I am sorry or something.
