How do you know if you have a 1g 4g63T or a 2G 4g63T?

My buddy bought a 1995 Talon TSi. Supposedly it has a 1G 4G63T 6 bolt engine and 1G transmission. Car came with another transmission that was supposedly a 2G transmission. Owner said that the 2G 4g63T transmission isn't compatible with a 1G engine. Is that true?

Also how do you verify if its a 1G 4g63T motor and how do you verify if its a 2G transmission that came with it?

Several terms are incorrect. DSMs do not have 6 bolt mains. The term "6 bolt" and "7 bolt" are the number of bolts in the flywheel/flexplate and are used as an identifier of the model year. 1g engines have motor mount bosses front and rear. 2g do not. They will be unused on a 2g if you have a 1g motor. The "6 bolt" motor will have a flat oil pan flange. A 2g trans bolts to a 1g motor just fine. The bolt patters are not 100% identical but it does bolt up. 2g has a slightly different shape towards the radiator side of the motor if I recall.

A 1G transmission is not “compatible” with a 2G car. The 2G has three “motor mounts” on the transmission and one on the engine (belt side) where the 1G only has one on the transmission and three on the engine.

So, most likely, it’s a 2G transmission. Look at the bell housing and see if all mounting points are used connecting to the block. Post a quality picture and we can tell you.
