I am parting out my 94 Eclipse and found that the ECU for the 1.8 is EPROM.

How common is this??

Not really seeing many 1.8 cars, or even reading of many people trying to do anything other than DD these cars has bumped my interst level a bit.

I will post a photo later tonight....

and there are many more functions to an ecu other than timing, the timing is still triggered by a pick-up, and though base timing is set by clocking of the distributor, the ecu should control timing adjustments to at least some degree...

I don't think it would be much use unless it was usable in a 4g63t car. Even then, ecmlink may not be compatible with it. I would check with someone from ecmlink about that

Based on my crossreference list Eclipse Talon Laser Galant 3000GT Stealth ECU ID Reference I guess I've see at least two versions of the 1.8L EPROM ECU since I have two different software versions listed. The fact that I don't remember seeing them anymore shows how much impact a 1.8L EPROM ECU made on me. They are not usable with the DOHC 4G63 engines.
