Im about to put the head back on my gst and i would like to get this stuff cleaned off before i do, that is unless you guys think its unecessary. If you could tell me what kind of chemical and what kind of tool i can use without scratching the wall i would appreciate it.

One more piece of advice, get new mechanics! You cannnot just leave it, the compression would be terrible that is if you didnt break a ring. You at least need to get the rust out of the bores. I can tell you that if there is rust in the bore then more that likley the rings have rust on them too. If the rings are rusted you need to replace them the rust will keep them from sealing properly. This is a problem that can be fixed but it is somthing that needs to be worried about. I would pull the oil pan and get the pistons out and see what you are working with, see what they look like and go from there. Once again- just my .02 Good luck

Well maybe you should have asked you mechanics that?

Why ask us something, then go to a mechanic, then come back and ask us something else?

I don't get it.
Im not talking about now. This was about a month ago before i had the head because i wanted to make sure it was do-able. Then i remembered one of them saying that i should probably get it cleaned up, and that is the purpose of this thread.

A month ago the rust might not have been as bad.

Anyway at this point your options have been laid out by several people. You can try honing that cylinder and see if the rust comes right off, right away. If it doesn't then you looking at a engine rebuild.

I'm doubting that's going to clean up based on seeing that second rust spot from the rings and the top area looking like water was sitting in the cylinder for a while before the crank was turned creating the second spot. A third might be in the works right now.
