Im about to put the head back on my gst and i would like to get this stuff cleaned off before i do, that is unless you guys think its unecessary. If you could tell me what kind of chemical and what kind of tool i can use without scratching the wall i would appreciate it.

That doesn't look good. You might have to get your cylinders bored depending on if there is ruts or not from the rust.

That is definitely looking like a rebore. I don't think rehoning the cylinder walls would be enough.

I dunno if its rust or not, i bought the car as a project. The wall is smooth up until that very top part where it gets a little bumpy, no scratches. Can i just replace the ring without pulling the block? All the other cylinders are basically perfect.

You can replace the rings without removing the block however that isn't going to do you any good when your cylinder walls still look like that. It's rust there is no doubt about it. Looks like your project just got a rebore and a new set of 20 over pistons. Good luck.

Dammit. I've had this car since august and haven't had it running yet.

So what steps do i have to go through to get this taken care of?

Because i didn't know how long the car had been sitting. I bought the car without the head.

try using some wd40 and see if the rust comes off. then run your fingernail across the the walls up and down, and if you feel ANY kind of bump or nick or anything, you need to get it bored.

To bore it, take it to a shop, ask them to measure how deep they need to bore, and ask them how much. Ask a few shops in your area, and go to the best deal you find, without compromising an uneven bore. You will need to pull your pistons and rods.

Another alternative would be to go to a junkyard and ask for a front end of your car. This way you get everything from the dashboard to the headlights, and have a replacement sitting for when a part of your project breaks.

Should I use any kind of cloth or brush to get the rust off?

And when I get it bored do I have to have every cylinder bored and will i need bigger pistons?

Any guesses on the cost of all this:cry: ?

Yes you have to have every person bored and yes you will need bigger pistons. Look at it this way when your done you will have more power than you did before. This is why it's called a project.

No one can look at a picture and tell you that it DEFINITELY (key word) needs to be bored. If you are on a budget then try to get the rust off then clean it up with a hone. Then you need to check piston to wall clearance. If the clearance is still within spec then put in new rings and go. The pics look pretty bad, but if you are on a tight budget then it would be worth the time to try. If nothing else you might get it running untill you get the money to do it right.

I agree with luvmygst, you can not truely tell by pics. however it looks pretty bad.

And pure, just becasue he may need bigger bore pistons does not mean more power. he will be able to HANDLE more power but not make it.

Well I've had two mechanics look at it and neither of them were too worried about it, said i should just get it cleaned up. I rolled the car forward a couple times to see if i could hear the pistons scraping or anything but there was no sound and they moved fine. Will this screw up my compression or what is going to happen if it needs to be bored/honed and i leave it?
