So I’m looking at getting ahold of a gsx project car the motor in it dropped a valve and is shot but comes with another 4g63 fully assembled. The car is a 97 with no rust and 104k on the clock but when I was looking at it I noticed it has impact damage and the whole rear end seems shifted. I’m not worried about body work but does anyone know if rear end might be salvageable? Also how can I verify if it’s a true gsx or a swap? It’s hard to tell in the pics but is noticeable in person. I’m tempted to still trade for it since shells in good shape but just wanted another opinion from people that know more than me.

Eclipse are unibody. The body is the frame. You would need another undamaged shell to fix this shell.

Its really bad. How bad?

Any dsm'er would use the car as a parts car to build another car better

The chassis is completely gone.

Can it be fixed? Sure. Might take a few years and another $15,000
Appreciate it man, I really want a gsx but I’m also broke so if it’s really not worth the fixing then I’ll have to find another project

The term "broke" is highly subjective, but if you are legitimately broke then I'm not sure buying a 25-29 year old Mitsubishi is the best idea LOL . I'm not here to judge though, I've gone broke BECAUSE of cars so many times in my past.
I mean broke in the sense I don’t have 15k sitting to buy a clean one LOL this was just an offer to trade one shitbox for another

What the hell is going on with the quarter panel... Someone take that guy's hammer, before he hurts himself.
Well... since you asked... :)

The paintless dent tech didnt have the knowledge to release the energy that is trapped in the panel. He should have knocked down the crowns first before attempting to push it out because it makes it much easier to do so. A crown (indicated with the yellow arrows) is like a shockwave from the impact.

Metal gets displaced into a high spot that runs the length of the top of the impact. The metal is super stiff in this state until you release the energy and you will just high spot the dent everywhere you push with the dent tool breaking the paint because a rubber tip wasnt used on the end of the tool. So it was metal-on-metal trying to force it upward. Lot of guys, that i came across from other companies would give this back to a customer or dealership and call this "done". Customer horrified... Dealerships surprisingly dont care and accept that as long as you show up every week. :notgood:

Bet there is a hole that was drilled in the wheel well and/or door jamb to get access to it

Oh, and If they didnt plug that hole properly, its rusting real good with water from the tire splashing on unprotected metal.

If you acknowledge its a shit box, and isnt a daily driver it isnt terrible. You can drive it and build it and just eventually know you will transfer parts to another shell.

Its more about your commitment level. As a hardcore enthusiast its a great deal for a build, you can get a stripped shell for less than a grand and build this one in the mean time. Any mods would be able to transfer to a new chassis, but the structure of this car is for all intents gone, and its worth nothing more than its parts. So if the trans goes out, or the motor dies, its really worth not much of anything
