Holset Intake Options

Just curious what people are running for intakes with the HX35/HX40's running a MAF (3" Evo 8) setup? Would it be better to run a 3" pipe and have it reduced from the turbo inlet or run a 4" pipe and have it reduced at the MAF? Recirculated of course...

I think it really needs to have a full 4" intake, or else you're going to be choking it with the 3" either way you do it. I think it's time to go speed density.

Agreed, I run the FP 4" intake on my HX 40. When I had a MAf though I don't think going from 3" to 4 " would be that big of a difference. So My vote if you have to run a MAF let that baby eat and reduce at the maf.

Reduced at the turbo, or reduced at the maf... A reduction is still a reduction.

How do you run a 4" intake pipe with out hitting the lower radiator hose? I have a Holset hx 35 with a 3" intake pipe. It barleys misses the radiator hose. Do you have some photos?

All you have to do is rotate the coupler, i made an FP Intake fit just fine and now have a 4" one i made also fits fine and with stock fan and rad too

I recently switched over to a recirculated setup, but still the same concept.

I use two 90 degree PVC 4" elbow pipes to a filter to another 90 degree elbo to 4" tubing to a 4" roof pipe flashing. Total cost with filter $125. True ram air scoop with filter and it works!!!

I run a 4" FP intake with a 2g maf on my Hx35. No issues

Fp intake here, on my hx35. With speed density setup, so no maf required.

I am going to run a hx35 but I want to run Speed density , what do I do to avoid buying the intake to get base map?Then reselling the part?is there an answer?

All you need is a vacuum source for the map and a bung in your UIC pipe or TB elbow to screw your IAT into and wire it up per the ECM Wiki. The bung will have to be welded in of course but I think it cost's us $20.00 to have it TIG'd in. You might want to read the Speed Density stuff on ECM Tunings website for details. I'm doing the same thing...HX40 with SD.

I was trying to avoid tuning from scratch on SD I wanted to calculate a base map to get it going or try to calibrate it so I could have a starting point for the turbo

Was there not an initial default SD table to start out with from ECM Tuning? My car has been down for almost a year and I am about ready to get her all back together and will be doing SD also, and when reading on ECM Tunings website, it says something about this:
Dialing in the VE Table
This is the “fun” part of a new SD installation. Luckily, there are a several tips and helpers that can make this process pretty painless.

• SD VE Adjust (SDRatio) - If you have the option of running on a mass airflow sensor while you dial in your speed density VE table, then definitely do so. This is the adjustment tool you'll use.
• SD VE Adjust (CombinedFT) - After you've got an initial SD VE table (either the default one provided for you or one derived from a mass airflow sensor), you can further refine closed loop behavior using this tool.

Just thought I would point it out. I may have to start from scratch too but would be great if Thomas provided a starting point (which he may have, I haven't looked on my computer to see). If you come up with a "base", get you started VE table, let us know and thanks.
