Hi newbie here with a question or 2 before I purchase my first DSM.

Hi guys, new to the dsm forums. I currently am looking into either a 1g eclipse (turbo'd) or an older mirage hatch with a 4g63 (t'd as well).

(((I currently have a Toyota that I was planning on tuning more, but unfortunately due to an extremely open deck engine and many other failures, I'm limited to low HP and trying to find as many weight loss mods as possible. PLUS, replacement parts for Toyota are extremely expensive. Easily 3x as expensive as what I've seen for DSMs. All costs aside, 250hp is really pushing it as a daily driver.)))

PLUS, most of the people here probably speak English and not Tagalog or some Japanese dialect like my current engine forums :|

Also, I'm still very split between the Mirage and Eclipse. I heard eclipse for control, but the mirage is dramatically lighter and... yeah this Mitsubishi will be my daily driver so the Mirage will offer good gas mileage. But I've also been told the mirage is very hard to control when it's time to have fun.

I searched around and couldn't find any pages specifically listing pros/cons to eclipse and mirage.

Also, I've done a bunch of reading on DSM 4g63s. Everything from balance rod removal pros/cons to OEM timing belt debates - but that's not what I'm looking for really. Specifically I'm looking for common or unexpected failures... I haven't found anything that has popped up on this forum too frequently.
And yeah I know the 1g engine is old, but aside from regular maintenance, is there anything I should expect down the road?

Uhm, I'm a forum junkie, so I'll be on here a bunch, reading... Always reading.

And Thanks ahead of time
I'll get back at any reply I get as soon as I can.

Chris.

92 6 bolt is the best year in my opinion, every thing is built tough in this year.
4 bolt axles
23 spline tranny and t case
6bolt engine much stronger than the 7 bolts
also the 1g cars have a better wheel bearing design over the 2g cars.

but I do like the previous years as well, I really like the flip up head lights.

I have owned both 1g and 2g cars, I like the body styling of the 2g cars but I hate the cheap interiors, I don't like the wheel bearing designs they are inferior to the older model, I don't like the 7 bolt engine, I don't like how 3 of the 4 engine mounts are on the tranny making it more difficult to work on and I don't like the suspension set up of the 2g.

the only thing I don't like about the 1g is that the 2g body styling is much nicer.
if I had to choose which one I like more I would say the 1g.

i use a 91 tsi as a daily driver...... definatly make sure you inspect the car before you think about buying it i know a few others had written that. honestly i love the dsm as a daily driver. its a nice drive and it can mighty fun to play with when i have that certain playful feeling while driving.... honestly i dont really know what the other car is i havnt looked it up or heard of it.... but if your a forums junkie stick with the dsm. ;) it is a fun car and a good daily driver, even if it does suck up gas faster than the other car.

Okay so after my last post. I did some reading around... And found some people talking about adding --ACETONE-- to a full tank of gas to greatly increase their fuel economy. First of all, it was a small amount. But even then, does this do more bad than help? A 4g63t tuner was talking about it.

Also, I found someone else saying he runs on low unleaded pump octane. Lowest we have here is 87. Wouldn't this cause knock? I know it does in my car. He went on saying he only does it when he doesn't expect racing.

Edit: Okay the acetone comment may have been dumb. A lot of people are saying it'll eat fuel seals and such away pretty fast. Still some people swear by it.

I will agree with 87 octane u will not get predet until u boost.

I run 90 ethanol blend in my car but I am a water meth injection junkie, I have run as much as 30 psi of boost on a 60trim dsm on 90 octane with the meth injection coming on at 15 psi and no hint of knock.

meth injection is the cheap alternative to race gas, not to mention it cleans all the carbon off your valves and pistons.

Yeah I saw it.

I thank you all greatly for your time. But I became a huge Fiero enthusiast since.
Working on that stuff atm now :p

If I were to go back to a front engine car, it'd likely be a DSM for parts prices... But as long as rear/mid engine Fieros exist I'm not turning back :p
