OK, so I'm looking into buying my first DSM. I've been searching for a long time now and it has been hard to find one that seems reliable and doesn't need weeks worth of work done. I want a 2g turbo model. I came across a few that I like. First off, I have some general questions:

1. What is a decent price range that a good condition 2g turbo model should be?
2. Around how many miles is too many for a DSM to be a moderately nodded daily driver?
3. What issues are a big no-no when it comes to buying a DSM?

Now, the car that I'm looking at...

It is a 96 talon tsi fwd with 141k miles. It has been converted to an eclipse body style, with a ricey, but clean body kit. I like the way it looks. It is fully functional, power windows and locks work, a/c and cruise control have been deleted and replaced with red under glow and neon lights in all of the vents and under the seats. The back is completely stripped of seats and interior paneling. I dont mind it at all. It has ralliart racing seats and harnesses, a short shifter, ams boost controller, a/f ratio, boost, and tach boost gauges. The engine was rebuilt 2 years ago but has been sitting for a while. Only driven 600 miles in the past 2 years. Changed on royal purple oil.

Mods:

Hahn race craft super 16g turbo, greddy type s bov, dejon tool IC pipes and big FMIC, Taylor 10.4 wires, ported 1g exhaust manifold and o2 housing, full 3" turbo back exhaust w/o cat, injen intake, ams boost controller.

Tokico suspension, 17" pro concept RSL wheels and strut bars.

It has some other cosmetic mods too.

I'm waiting g to hear what ecu and tuning program it is running on as well as injectors and fuel pump.

Only known issues are it has idle surge due to a faulty iacv, and some rust on the strut towers. I have a friend who can fix both.

What issues may occur in the short time I will be driving this car before getting this things fixed? Is $4700 a good price for this car? I talked him down from 6k. I will be including pics shortly. Please, any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Well it sounds good, do you have any pics? Stock is always good also, any reasons on why he is selling it?

I am sorry, but it annoys me when people ask "Why is he selling?" Number one, who cares.. Even if he is selling because it's a P.O.S. He isn't going to tell you... It's none of our business.

Didn't mean to offend a person that isn't buying the car. I was simply curious. He can say that also, a lot of people ask that question and a lot of the times it gets answered.

So again I'm sorry to offend you with my curiosity.

Well guys, I would like to announce that I am now officially a proud DSM owner! Got a bone stock 98 GSX in mint condition! Car runs perfectly :) check engine light randomly turned on while I was driving on the highway back home. Car has No signs of any issues, so does anyone know why it could be? My friend who knows a lot about these cars said it is probably the catalytic converter. Just hoping it isn't something major!

Haha I was only kidding. But you could always try and just upload them to your profile. And maybe theres and issue uploading pics on threads, because I had a similar problem last week.

In my area rust free gs-t go anywhere from 3k-5k and the GSX depends on if the people know what they have.... My advice on buying a new DSM or new car in general, is to be patient and wait for you dream car within your price range. They eventually will flop into your lap, you'll check it out, and just be super happy in the long run with you purchase. My current 2g n/t turbo was an impulse buy because I had the money and wanted a car right then. Probably the worse decision of my life. I spent 3k on a rebuilt title eclipse rs (didn't even look at the title when I bought it sheesh), found out later down the road it has major underside damage, and would cost a lot more to fix up than I am willing to put into an RS with a n/t 420a motor. When I get some extra money, i'm going to sell my RS and buy a Stock or near to stock GS-T that I like and will have looked over thoroughly. AND I will check the title, haha

Yes I waited a long time and it finally jumped out right in front of me. I am in love with my car. It is everything I could have asked for. I found it in Illinois. I'll have pics up when I pass the probationary period on my account. It's a 98 gsx with 150k on the boost and 40k on the motor/tranny. This car was babied and drives like it is brand spankin new. Paid 4900 and it is rust proof. Coated wheel wells and underbody and has a grease coating on the strut towers. Bone stock as well, 2 toned leather interior.

I loves me some 98's :)
Sounds like you got a really beautiful one too. Good for you! Keep it nice, shiny, and well maintained and it'll be your new baby.

life lesson #35: dont spend the your money on something if it isnt really what you want.
