Hey guys,
I scored a '93 Talon TSI FWD on Saturday and just got it registered and everything. It is gray with maroon trim and red interior (ack), but I will definetly repaint it in the future. It is a 5spd with 42k miles on it and it has an HKS intake system.
It does need some work and has some problems, maybe you guys have had similiar problems and can tell me what the most likely cause is before I buy a bunch of parts. I am not new to turbo cars, I own a 92 Stealth that is heavily modded, but this little sucker seems to react differently.
Prob 1: Shifter
Shifter popped out of 5th on the drive to my house. Doesn't move around when I let off/on the throttle. Did a search and I will be tightening the nut the usually comes loose this weekend.
Prob 2: No top end power
The car has nice pep and is responsive in low RPMs and low low boost. Once I go above 4k rpms and try to go anything more than ~50% throttle, the car revs and boosts but doesn't seem to go anywhere. It hesitates a bit but just has no power. It felt like spark blow out to me, but I changed to NGK coppers and gapped them down and used some magnecores. I check for vaccum leaks as well and couldn't find any. The only thing I can think of is the HKS intake (has a MAS built into it) is jacked up and missing counts under higher flow?? I have a couple MAS on the way.
Prob 3: Exhaust Manifold
Yeah its got a big crack on the top of it. I welded a bead on it for the time being until I can get a 2G.
The main problem I would like to fix ASAP is the studdering/no power at higher boost. Does this sound like spark or a bad MAS? I don't want to go buy coil packs and a transistor pack if I don't need them.
I purchased a K&N open element filter and am awaiting the MAS to install it. I have a TMO datalogging system, but don't want to take the cable out of my car, so I will order one for the Talon. I plan to add a MBC, boost guage, some 3000GT wheels w/ 225s, and possibly an exhaust system.
Thanks for the help and I look forward to learning more about these cars.
