I just recently bought a 91 talon tsi awd from a post on Craigslist. I first took a drive down to see it and on the 2nd I bought it. So far the only problems it has is the power steering isn't properly working. From a stop its difficult to turn but once its given a little gas its a lot easier.

So far I've been thoroughly enjoying it. Its been my DD for a week with no major problems. Idle's a little off so it has shut off a couple times when shifting gears(Auto transmission).

All in all I am very excited to get into the DSM world and I'd greatly appreciate any tips and where to begin. I'll post some pics below (hope the links work)

Looks like a nice ride. Lows miles too :thumb: And a friendly fyi: it's getting close to the timing belt replacement time (120k mi.). Be sure to do the water pump and timing belt B as well.

The wanting to die at shifts could be a few different things. Your FIAV might not be closing all the way, there could be a boost leak in the system somewhere, or there could be an issue with your MAF. To temporarily band-aid the situation, you can raise the base idle (using the base idle set screw or BISS) a bit to compensate.

The power steering issue might be from a bad pump or low on fluid. That should be a quick fix.

Lastly, in the engine picture you posted, I noticed that the t-belt is exposed. A plastic cover is actually supposed to go on there to protect the belt. Maybe you just removed it for the picture?

Anyway, good luck and welcome to the forums!

Hey thank you for the response and sorry for double posting I deleted the other to be on the safe side ^^

Yeah I'll be replacing the timing belt soon after I get the steering sorted out. I'm hoping its the pump and not the rack and pin.

As for the idle I've been raising it for now, hopefully I can get it sorted after the steering. I think it might be a boost leak because at higher RPM's it seems to be losing power. Also any reason why when I floor it the car slows down instead of speeding up and it shakes a bit? It doesn't happen when I accelerate to the speed gradually though.

So far I'm loving this car though and I plan on modding once I get it patched up. Mostly stock from what I can tell(and I can't tell too much since its my first dsm hehe).

    P.S

No it didn't come with a plastic cover should I get one?

.. Hey whats up man, Welcome to the DSM World buddy..

Yes Get A Timing Belt Cover, i recommend and I'm pretty sure everyone or at least most of us will, its a plastic piece but its a good shield/protector from anything trying to get to the timing belt.

A Year from next month i bought my 1st DSM(2G), and since then it has been in the garage modding it galore, and now its about 6 days to go until i bring it out, many of my friend don't know i have it, so it will be a good surprise, and I've don't a lot to it. So far everything has been done by me and I'm soon getting it out for the 15th of Next Month, which is the DSM/EVO vs Subaru WRX/STI shootout here in Raceway Park-Englishtown..

As for you, the best place to start with mods, maintenance and others, is here : Tech Guide - DSMtuners

Searching and reading is the best Mod of all for our cars :) Especially here where we have so many Knowledgeable tuners around..

I myself prefer to run on the lower portions of the timing cover so I can easily inspect my t-belt every time I check fluids (usually no less than 1x each week). But if you really feel that you need the top most timing belt cover, get a clear one.

    Go here http://www.dsmtuners.com/1g_dsm_free_mods

And perform Steps 6-14 11, and 13 are optional. I would suggest putting a small inline fuel filter instead of a breather filter. Just cut the vacuum line coming from the side of the Valvecover and insert a small enough fuel filter in there to catch oil.

Also timing belt, spark plugs, accessory belts, radiator hoses, thermostat, radiator cap, oil cap/oil cap gasket, and valve cover gasket are nearly always good things to replace on a new dsm before the modding bug bites. You can use your own judgment to decide which are absolutely needed.

Hey guys thanks for the input.

This weekend I hope to replace a couple of pieces mentioned to try and avert any damage that may come. Caps plugs etc. I also plan to get a Haynes manual, saw one today but it was for the 2g cars.

Any idea on how to fix my FIAV or MAF? I'll be doing a boost leak so hopefully its that but just in case. The car has been running okay but has stalled on me a couple of times.

Tonight I was idling and the lights began to dim a little followed by a stall : / I raised the idle using the BISS so hopefully it lasts. I'm sure the cold weather has affected it as well.

    Welcome to the DSM world!
Kreez gave good input. So i'll 1+ it.
Second do all required maintenance. It should be smooth sailing from there.
As for your MAF buy some MAF sensor cleaner. See if that helps out.

Hey guys thanks for the input!

Unfortunately for today I have my first real mishap :(

As I was driving the engine suddenly got real loud as if I had installed a big muffler or something. I pulled over for a sec and turned off the car. I started it again and it started with no problems but it was still making a really loud sound.

I drove it home but it wouldn't go past 2k-3k rpms. I could kind of hear the BoV but couldn't feel the turbo kick in. Any ideas on what could cause it?

Yeah that was the first thing I did when I got it.

Still dealing with the loud knocking noise coming from the engine : / gonna take it apart to see whats the damage. Any chance its not going to end up as an engine rebuild?

Hey guys thanks for the response.

Yes I bought this car from pa. Haven't done the leak tests this weekends I hope to narrow down the problem. Would leaks cause a loud noise? And yes it bogs a lot. I have to use it as my DD today unfortunately hope it holds out

Loud noise out of no where and bogging out.... could have some sort or preturbo leak? everytime i think of bogging or a similar term, i think of a fried ecu and/or capacitors, etc. So i would pull the ECU and check that. I assume the AUTO ECU's had potential same issues like manual ones? (i only say that because im not sure about automatic dsm data)

loud noise could be an exhaust mani crack or leak of some sort. that really sucks dude. im sorry for ya but lets hope its something simple. you have heard rod knock before right? thats a pretty quiet knock compared to what ## describing. if it runs, i think you can rule out the ecu LOL, thats not the problem.

Yeah hopefully by this weekend I'll know. Had to use it as my DD today.

It drove to say the least. Acceleration is really slow, RPMS don't pass 3k. Noise kind of evens out around 3k RPM but I haven't dared trying to go higher than 3k.

Alright so took it to a local mechanic for him to have just a quick overlook and give his opinion....As far as he can tell without opening and getting dirty the "engine" sounds fine. I'm not quite sure if he has ever dealt with a turbo car before as my town is small and I'm pretty sure I'm the only 1g DSM here(Saw a 2g once). Would the engine still run if not properly connected to the turbo? How do I tell if the turbo is blown or if its just got a huge leak or something of the sort.

I've heard blown turbos give off white smoke or blue but nothing yet.

Hey guys ty for being patient with me I'm still a DSM noob hehe. Well today I took a closer look and saw that my front exhaust pipe wasn't connected to my cat....so that explains the sound. Going to try and get that fixed ASAP and see if anything else is wrong. hear a whistling sound thats probably a leak somewhere right?

Picked up a Haynes repair manual as well, I'm getting there....slowly

Yes bogging and not getting to higher rpms shows your flooding the engine with gas and no air, hence all the talk of pre-turbo exhaust leak or possible something in the intake area. either way your not taking in enough air.
