Hello all,
As I posted when I joined, I got my hands on a stock 1995 Mitsubishi GSX with roughly 112,000 on it. I have about 120,000 miles on it now, and overall, I give the car a 9 out of 10. The few hiccups I have with it are cosmetic, except for the transmission. It seems that some of my synchros are shot, and shifting is finnicky, but I've learned to work with it for now. There is an aftermarket cone filter in place of the stock housing. The only things I've done to it so far are change the oil (synthetic blend for now) and put in new spark plugs. Up on my list to do is change transmission fluid (bought my redline oils already), probably throw on some NGK spark plug wires and get around to compression and boost-leak testing.
What I would like out of this car is to eventually be a fun little weekend car, and maybe hit the track once or twice a year. I don't have a specific psi goal or track time goal in mind, but I would like to aim for a RELIABLE 350 HP or a little more. I want to purchase the right parts, quality parts, to reach my goal. So, I was hoping you fine folks could give me some input as to what I should be looking at to get there.
I know that there is preventive maintenance to be done, and supporting mods as well. So lets think about what would be good for me? I should note that the less modification work, the better. As in, bolt on is ideal for me as much as possible.
Tuning: I'd like to run ECMLink or something similar so that I can tune from home at my own pace once I get the hang of things. I want to tune to 91 octane pump gas, as that's what's most common premium here. We have some 92 and sparse 93, but 91 is the majority. [ECMLink yes]
Gauges: I hear so much about wide band this and that, so I realize I need that as well. I guess I picture a 3-gauge A-pillar pod with a wideband, boost and a third gauge, whatever you guys think. [Wideband, Boost and Oil Pressure]
Boost control: Manual or electronic, whatever gets the job done. Not something I'd fiddle with often enough, so I think manual would be fine, in the engine bay. [Hallman Pro MBC]
BOV/Wastegate: I've read NOT to vent to the atmosphere, so I think maybe a 1st gen BOV or an aftermarket wastegate that returns to the system is what I'd need. What is good for my goal of 350+? [1st Gen BOV, Internal Wastegate]
Radiator/Intercooler: For my goal, do you think I need a FMIC? Or should the stock format suffice? Should I upgrade my radiator? [FMIC yes, Radiator no]
Exhaust: I'd like to do a 3" turbo-back exhaust. Maybe a high-flow catalytic converter (not to keen on running an illegal test-pipe, although I don't have emissions testing in my area). Brands? What about headers/exhaust manifold? [Exhaust Manifold, O2 Housing, Cat-Delete Downpipe, Dat-Back]
Turbo: There's the big question. I've done a little research, and it seems that the Evo III 16G may just fit my needs perfectly. Then again, maybe you have a better/cheaper idea for what I want? I realize I would also need a little modding/conversion kit for my 2g. Then again, if I do all the supporting mods I plan to, maybe I should bump up the size of my turbo a little. [MHI Evo III 16G]
Fuel: I realize the stock injectors are quite restrictive on these engines. I would expect to throw in bigger injectors, possibly a fuel pump if necessary. What size injectors and fuel pump would I need for my goal? [Walbro 255, AFPR, AEM Fuel Rail, ~800-1000cc Injectors]
Cams: Is that necessary for my goal? I assumed a cam swap was for a more aggressive goal. No cams at this time.
So basically, I'm open to any and all suggestions. I'd like to have a plan of attack hashed out and maybe buy a few parts here and there, especially now since the holiday sales are starting

). If it is, i definitely suggest link. If not, there are other options for ecu changes, or just socketing the ecu for eprom.
