as mentioned above. would it really be worth it to me to swap to a dsmlink? i mean i don't have a laptop and about the only variables i can't adjust is the timing, idle rpm, and injector size. i think that's the only thing i can't adjust anyway. but if i need to change my injector size or idle rpm, i could just pay a few bucks more and send the chip back to get reprogrammed. i'm wondering about the timing though. i've heard it helps to be able to adjust that (although i've never messed with that other than base timing) but wouldn't know how or what would be best for it since i've never done it.

as soon as i got this whole setup, they released the dsmlink version for 1g's. go figure. but is there anything else out there that i could just buy to adjust my timing if i needed that feature? any parameters that'd need adjusting that i'm leaving out? what would ya'll do? what would justify getting rid of my logging software and dsmchip to have to pay $500-600 for dsmlink and then a new laptop? thanks for any input.

i also failed to mention that all i do is drag race other than driving on the street. no auto-x so i'm not thinking i need THAT many adjustment parameters do it?

I had the same set up and went DSMLink. The MAFT is a piece of shit on many levels. The chip is generic so your global and dead time probably aren't right, I know mine weren't. And the pocketlogger can't log nearly as many parameters or frames as DSMLink. Add on all of the other toys and tools of DSMLink and I feel it's worth the money and then some. Everyone that I know that's made the switch has said the same thing. :thumb:

yeah but the chip is programmed to make up for the dead time, etc. etc. and the gm maf allows me to get rid of the stock maf. i can only think backm in the day where the dsmlink and other things weren't even in existance and people were running 10's on 20g's all day long. now that stuff is like old school etc. but everyone feels you HAVE to get this or that. just having a hard time seeing why i'd need to swap my setup and spend all that money on it.

pretty much my question is, what parameters MUST i need to be able to adjust (idle and injector size isn't gonna effect my 1/4 mile times) in order to have the car tuned well other than the timing? other than timing, i can't think of anything that my setup isn't doing already but then again, i don't use dsmllink....yet.

...plus too, i'm sure there's plenty of people out there with my same dilema. there's always something new that comes out after ya finish your whole friggin setup. don't wanna have to do it all over again. so this might be a thread for those people wondering what they can do to make up for the lack of options that the dsmlink gives ya without having to turn around and pay $1,000 or so on a lap top, pay $500-600 on dsmlink, and maybe have to worry about finding another ecu or getting it socketed. i mean it was just maybe a year and a half ago (if that) that the new maft version came out and already there's a new one. uggghhhh!!!! as soon as i spend all that money for a dsmlink, there will be some "new version" that doesn't require the laptop or some other product that's even better. never fails.

I tuned my 97, a 2g, with Keydiver chip and Maft to 11.7 at 119.8. I had a PTE 50trim with 264/272 cams 2.3 stroker. I had no problems with the MAFT. Some people can tune others can't. It takes work. No I have a 1g. Pretty much the same setup less cams. ]
From my readings, DSMLINK timing control isn't the best.

You pretty much sound like you don't want DSMLink even if you do need it. I'm not going to talk you into it because I'm not on comission ;) but in my opinion and in my experience, the controll I had beyond my MAFT, chip, and logger was well worth the money.

As for the comment on timing controll backed up by absolutly nothing; The timing controll is what it is. It's WOT timing controll. No, it's not load based, no there's no part throttle control. Is it usefull? Hell yeah. Is it as good as AEM? Hell no.

My comment about dead time meant the generic dead time for X fuel injector, probably doesn't match the dead time needed for YOUR fuel injectors. Mine was off by about 60us even though my chip was burned for the 650cc FIC fuel injectors I had installed.

Good luck

oh okay, well yeah i DO want it. heck i've wanted it for a long time. but i just didn't know if it'd be worth the money to swap the whole setup that i already have if it only gave me one or 2 extra lil features ya know? i mean, let's say that my setup did everything the dsmlink did except for timing control. well i'd sure as heck wouldn't wanna spend around $1500 or so just for that one little feature unless it was REALLY needed. so that's why i'm wondering if it's worth it, for what i'd get over the setup and features i already have.

ahhh, okay thanks. i may just have to get it. and maybe keep my pda layin around for the other 1g guys who need datalogging with pocketlogger. thanks for the input.

You can use your PDA for DSMLink also. It's nice to keep in the glove box in case you throw a code or need to make a quick change.

yeah, but i already have 2 pda's and supposedly neither of the one's i have would work. i'd have to buy one of those as well. the one's i have arer the zire 71 and 72. but yes, it'd be nice to be able to use that feature instead of lugging around a laptop all the time. especially since i made a nice lil custom pda holder :D

by the way, if anyone knows hal landry's e-mail or something, could ya please pm it to me? i have a question to ask him about the cable and pda use. thanks!
