im guessing ill need to take off the alternator belt along with the crank pulley,
2 questions.

1. will i need to adjust the tension after replacing the belts
2. where would i find the correct belts and pulleys i need. I can get the crank pulley from mitsu, but anyone have an idea where i can get a cheap belt? THANKS

You can go to your local Advanced Auto Parts store. They sell Driverite belts which are decent belts. The main accessory belt shouldn't cost you more than 10 bucks. Power steering should be about 8-10 bucks.

Unless you have a perfectly balanced engine, i would highly reccomend the balancer/OEM one. www.conicelli.com. Go there, link it, save it, do whatever. That should be the only place you get OEM parts. :thumb:

You are going to need a pulley puller in order to get the harmonic balancer off. It is pressed on unlike the 4g63. You are going to have to remove the alt and pwr steering belt if I remember correctly. Yes you will have to mess with the tension. Have fun with that alternator, its a bi***. You are also going to have to remove the top engine mount and raise/lower the engine so that you can get the pulley past the fender well. You will also have to remove the passenger tire and 1 plastic sheild held on by some cheap plastic screws. Napa may sell a new harmonic balancer, not sure. As for the belts you can get those at just about any parts store.

ok here's pics of my crankshaft pulley, how the fuk did this happen?

is it supost to do that? heh

where's a good place to get a underdrive pulley and belts? pref lightweight pulley : P

It happens over time. Mine did it as well.

There is a "dampener" between those two pieces, and over time, it begins to seperate.

Mach V sells a pulley kit, but I would reccommend the OEM one, just because I have heard stories of premature bearing wear and other things from using a non-dampened pulley. This has been debated before, and some searching might guide you toward which way you want to go.

I personally use a Unorthodox Underdrive pulley, and it works fine. Machv.com has high prices, if you want a stock pulley call or visit Conecelli(sp?) Mitsubishi, its listed in the sponsors page I believe.

Yea that happened to me about a month ago, the guy at the dealership said it was nothign to worry about. He said it happens, and I should be glad the original one lasted me that long.

i have the squeeeeeeek problem now. I have to get it replaced , Conecelli 92.00

When mine came apart, it stuffed the A/C belt into lower timing belt cover, causing the TB to jump 5 teeth and trashed my valves.

thats not too uncommon either, mine threw the belt into the timing cover also, luckly it didnt actually hit the belt. i didnt hear anything, smell anything, i had no idea. the only way i knew something was wrong, was that my factory oil pressure gauge was reading nothing, and i had just fixed it. i pulled on the belt that was cut into the lower cover and the large part of the pulley fell off and smashed my finger haha. aint life a bi*** LOL.

hply shiiit man. i'm trying to move this week, and working 2 jobs so i don't even have time for this shit. i'm thankfull it wasn't what happened to you, sorry though.

Yea when it happened to me, both the belts came off. All my lights on my dash became lit, Im telling you I was sh!tting a brick till I realized it was just the pulley.

LOL i had it happen too, but i thought i blew my engine when it went all my belts broke except for the timing belt and like all the warning lights came on,LOL i was shittin my pants till it kept on running and found out it was that damn pully :thumb:

I was just wondering what all was required when replacing the Harmonic Balancer? How hard is it to do? And also....is the larger bolt in the center if the HB left handed thread or standard? Just wanted to be sure before i went yankin on it....also, anyone have the torque spec on that bolt? Thanx a ton.

That center bolt doesn't need to be removed to change the crank pulley/harmonic balancer. You just need to remove the four smaller bolts around it. I'm not sure of the torque spec for them. My manuals are at work. Just find the right spec and be sure not to overtorque them. It'll be a pain in the ass to have them break. :thumbdown

I had a new problem develope with harmonic balancer. apparently the harmonic balancer rubber came apart from the outer part of the crank pulley. luckly it was sitting the driveway when it happened instead of the freeway. Is there a performance harmonic balancer I can install instead of the factory part?

They have lightweight crank pulleys, but they are one piece, not two, so there is no damper in it.

My stock 2G pulley had the same mark as a 1g.
I'm not sure which pulley I used when I installed the 6 bolt block I had, kinda mixed them up. I couldn't find any significant differences. That same pulley is on the 7 bolt 2.4 thats in the car now.

Not sure if that helps much but I haven't had any probs.

I'm having trouble removing my crank pulley. I removed the stock crankshaft bolt and noticed that it's stripped so I ordered a new one from Mitsu. I the meantime, I screwed in a longer bolt of the same thread to use for pulley removal like my instructions say to do. Does the new bolt have to screw in as far as it can because I am having great difficulty doing this? I hooked up the 3 toothed 5 ton gear puller and started cranking with the screw part of it pushing against the new bolt. After some time, the screw part of the gear puller began to bend the bolt and eventually it pushed itself off the bolt. I don't have a torch to heat up this pulley. Am I doing something wrong? What is the best way to get this thing off?

woah man.... crank pulleys usually come off pretty easy

did you take out the center bolt? DON'T DO THAT!
that's messing with your timing belt.....

there should just be 4 smaller bolts... i think that they're 10-12mm....

take those 4 out and the pulley should come off nice 'n' easy

....oh wait... you have a 420A....

hmmm.....

well.. what i just said is true for the 4g63.... i'm not sure about the 420A
