I took off the covers to the timing belt assembly (can't believe they expect you to get to some of the bolts they put on their behind pulleys..)and once i got the cover off i saw that my balance shaft belt was torn is half and in not so great condition. i dont know if i broke it awhile back when racing a honda and then noticed a slight drop in oil presssure or what. i didn't think the car could run without it working but i dunno. Anyways. I got a replacement belt tensior for the timing belt and compared it to the one i took off. Found out that the one i took off is the tensioner for the 1g 7 bolt engine. The tensioner that i have new is the 2g 7 bolt tensioner. I have a 1995 tsi awd but i didn't think my car was manufactured that early in the yr to get the 1g 7 bolt. But i put in the 2g 7bolt tensioner and it fits fine, just a little longer. Main question is this, can a harmonic balance from a 1g be put on a 2g without any problems or ill effects? and how do i tell exactly if i have the 1g 7 bolt or the 2g 7 bolt? Thanks and sry for the long post, thought i'd fill you all in with the whole story. -Brandon [VFRacing]

Oh yeah, i know that but i am talking about this bolt behind the pulley that the ps pump goes to. But am pretty sure my waterpump is dead since i hear a rather loud grinding noise when the car is on and gets really loud when i rev it up, not a squel like a belt, kinda like metal scraping. -brandon [VFRacing]

Update: Well, i put on the 1g harmonic balancer, no problem or difference. Turned the engine on and somewhere in the timing assembly it sounded like there was gravel in a bearing or the oil pump. Narrowed it down to the idler pulley. Bearings are shot and i didn't notice it until now since i put a new tensioner on and the belt is obvioulsy much tighter. Heh, odd thing though. I am still unsure as to what engine i have. I am just short of taking off the tranny and looking for myself if it is a 6 bolt, 1g 7bolt or 2g 7bolt. I looked at my oil pan and from what i can tell, i have a 6bolt oil pan according to the vfaq. I had a 1g 7bolt tensioner on the timing system and a 2g 7bolt harmonic balancer. It's like my engine is frankenstein LOL. Well, i'd be very grateful if anyone knows of any other ways to tell what engine you have minus taking off the tranny and inspecting the flywheel. Thanks, Brandon [VFRacing]

If you have a crank sensor mounted near the crank, or a place to mount it near the crank, then you have a 2G 7 bolt :dsm:

What does the sensor look like exactly? and i found out the problem with the engine. The idler pulley was bad but that was not the thing causing the noise. It was actually the balance shaft OMG So i have no idea as to why it was doing this but it sounds terrible, so now i am running with the bs belt cut and the tensioner inplace to keep from oil coming out of the hole. I would like to konw of a possible reason why it would be making such a terrible noise. thanks, -Brandon [VFRacing]

lovely. well i guess that means i'm not gonna put a bs belt on it anytime soon. Just gonna wait for the built 6 bolt 2.0 or 2.3. still trying to decide what would be better in the long run. thanks for the info - Brandon [VFRacing]

Yah, those B-shafts are junk. Don't run your engine with it makin that noise though! I have an engine that ruined its bs bearing, then kicked it out into the oil pan to be repeatedly struck by the crank, all while it is still spinning and throwing a fist full of shavings all over the engine. There were flakes all the way up in the head. Eleminate the BSs while you still have time! (I also have 2 other 6bolts that were ruined from BS related problems)

Yeah, well i dont need to eliminate it since it doesn't spin anymore. When i put the built engine in this summer i will eliminate the bs shafts.
