My harmonic balancer came apart the other day. I started having some weird problems, and at first thought my water pump, alternator, or ps was going out. It started flickering lights on my dash and started to overheat, it also started to chirp real loud. After further diagnosis I found that the crank pulley had walked back into the front cover and luckily didn't get my timing belt or any major damage. It is in two pieces
. Here's my dilemma. I have read through alot of posts on here, and it seems that dsm's tend to eat these balancers. I also have read that aftermarket ones such as dorman are useless and tend to not last long at all. So I need to get an oem or fluidampr or ati. I'm just wondering why it is these things come apart on these cars so often. Let me know what you think. I was wondering if removing the balance shafts, and the ac might have something to do with it, since these are both very common mods. Removal of the shafts adds more vibration, thats something my father mentioned, and I have read that overtightening your alternator can cause it. Well if you don't have an ac belt pulling on the otherside, couldn't this cause a slight unbalance in pull. Just something I was wondering. I really want the fluidampr, but can't afford it right now and would like to get my car back together. Should I just buy an oem and hope for the best. Sorry the post is so long, but I was thinking about this today, and knew you guys and worked on more of these than I have.
