Well i just learned that my new wheels and rims threw my speedometer off by 5mph...cop pulled me over doing a 65 in a 50, when the speedometer said 60. i was going up hill so i was trying to keep the car moving...4 cylinders and hills :notgood:

I had a ticket dropped because of the rims I had on my old 93 Talon. The rims weren't new or anything but I stated I had aftermarket rims on the car and the lawyer I hired had the ticket dropped. I had to hire a lawyer because I was unable to appear in court due to I was just passing through Winston-Salem, NC on my way to Georgia.

Gearing. Understand it, and use it. Next time downshift and slow down.

You'd have to have a pretty BIG wheel to change the speedo by 5 mph. I have 235/55/18's on my car and the speedo changed by 3 mph.

So you thought you were doing 60 in a posted 50. Guilty, pay the clerk.

What the hell were you towing? If it was enough of a grade to matter to the motor at 50, you needed to downshift.
Yes, you've got a helluva set of tires on that thing to gain 5 mph.

Add in the fact that DSM speedometers over-report actual speed and this whole thing sounds fishy.

I used to have a GPS in my car that would give me the actual speed I was going. With my factory 215/50/17 tires, at about 75 on the speedo the car was actually going closer to 70mph. The speedo's are off by a percentage. What that means is the faster you go, the more your speedo will be off. Oh, and this applies to all cars, just some have way more inaccuracy than some. I've driven a Volvo S60 T5 with the same GPS in it, and it was barely off, even at high speed where the biggest difference should be; almost dead on at 70mph.

Sounds like the tires in question are WAY oversize, or the cop didn't have his gun calibrated correctly, or he wasn't targeting who he thought he was.

Good test info. on some of the Radar Detectors on the market. Happy reading. :thumb:

And what size rim and tire do you have on your car to throw off such a large margin of error?

Why is this thread still going?

Let's say he started with 215/55/16s. In order for him to really to be going 65 when his speedo said 60, he'd need something like 245/55/17s, ignoring the speedo error (since I'm not 100% sure if 1G NTs have the same gear as 1G Ts). It's total nonsense.
