Hard downshifts with jerk and whining noise while on Neutral

Hi Guys!

Can you guys help me, after driving for at least 20-30 mins, my 95'2g will suddenly jerk hard while downshifting and it will have a hard time and jerks while going to 2nd and 1st gear vice versa I need to turn off the keys and run it again to be able to move again. I notice that when I'm on Neutral and there's no whining noise, my car will run smooth with no problem. But sometimes my transmission emits a whining noise on Neutral, and that's when the jerking and hard downshifts happens. Can you please help me on this? Do I need a rebuild? Bad TCM? Or other stuff? No engine light.


2g Eclipse is my dream car. I appreciate any help.

Could be many things.. have you tried a fluid/filter change? How was the color and smell?

When my converter started to go it did similar things in the beginning but so can bad caps in tcu or shift solenoids.

Start by checking the fluid level. The fluid level check is only accurate when the car is running
in Neutral -- not Park.

I just replaced the ATF, level is good, but still has the issue. Does a bad TCU cause a whining noise while in neutral?

That would usually be converter.. how loud is it?

It is actually whining or hissing sound on neutral gear. It gets loud as I rev. I will check it if it's indeed the torque converter.
