So I was driving my DSM a couple of months ago and I felt a huge loss of power. I thought my clutch finally took a dookie on me. I drove it back home and put it on a lift and saw that my axle was popped out! Like everyone else before me the half shaft bolts broke in the block! Well at least one of them. The other decided it was time to head out and take the threads with it. I put a tap in to clean the threads up a bit and a bolt from ACE and within a mile of trying to limp it to my buddy’s house the axle bracket had play. Any recommendations as to what I should do to repair the threads? I’m going to pull the block out next week and I have the OEM bolts from STM. I was thinking about buying a timesert? But with the dog point on the oem bolt I’m not so sure if that’s the best idea. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

I would use a helicoil style thread repair instead of a timesert. The timesert requires you to drill the hole larger than the helicoil does and you also may have a harder time getting the timesert flush with the hole than you would with a helicoil. If the helicoil does ever fail you at least will have meat left to try a timesert.

The dog point bolt should not be an issue with either a timesert or helicoil.

Makes sense! I will definitely try the helicoil instead. Thanks for the advice.

I replaced those bolts with grade 10 allen head bolts. I have liked them and they are easier to work with in a limited space.
