ok im a college student poor college student this would be my daily driver i recently got in an accident and sold the remains from my car for 1300 i have 1600 at the moment i saw a 1998 gs from a dealer for 1800 dollars i really want a gst but i dont really want to wait 1 to 2 months till i get enough money to afford one would turboing a gs be reliable this way i can get the car now and save for the turbo? i want a cheap turbo nothing big just a little more power.i had a 3g gt and it had alright acceleration basically a gst and how hard is it to install a turbo? thank you
and how reliable are dealers ive only bought from owner twice never from a local dealer its a cheap looking dealer nothing like toyota or mitsubishi dealer

I would just wait to get the gst. Dealers are shady but so can people. Be sure to get a carfax and check for the usual rust spots, in the front of the rear tires in the fenders, under the hatch, strut towers, and the spare tire well to name a few.

I suggest you search the forums on how to turbo a car before you chose which one you want to go with.

if you can find a gst for $1600 then get one, because everyone here is telling u to that got one:aha:

honestly it up to u bro. . . LOL. i really dont think a 3g gt is like a gst LOL. . but thats me. no matter what u get they will both look the same from the outside.. LOL

there is a gsx down here for 2300. . its a 95

I bought a 96 rs back in 01 and had it for 9 years. Every day I wished I had held out for a gsx. I finally got one and would never go back.

Don't even bother with the gs for 2 reasons, 1 - Dealers are sharks, and 2 - you can find yourself a decent gst in the streets and in the end it's going to be way more fun than the gs relatively speaking.

Why hasn't anyone suggesting picking up a 1g? You can find a 1g GSX for around 1500 with little to no needed work.

I happen to be a fan of the Talon's, mainly because they don't make them anymore (so any day you don't drive, the value goes up about 25 cents), and people always say stupid shit like "them Talon's are way faster than Eclipses!", so it makes me feel good... haha.

And 3g GT isn't ANYWHERE near a GST... I smoke 3g's all day long, they're ugly, and they're not 4G63, so they're not worth the heavy price tag.

yea look at 1g's, but i wouldnt recommend getting a gs and adding turbo, will end up spending more than a gst and wouldnt be as reliable

there is nothing wrong with the 420a engine from the 2G NA motors. But, i would have to agree... if you get one at a dealership you will pay the price of a gsx and then the price to toss a brand new turbo system in it. And thats with you only paying for the car itself, insurance, and title and registration. Look around on ebay or locally or autotrader. Find something in your budget. a 1G would be cheaper than a 2G just for the basics of age. But how many 1G's havent been modified already, and do you really want to tackle someone else's project and possibly have to repair it all?

SIDE NOTE: if you find a car you like and it says 1.8L skip it! i don't care how nice it is... skip it!
(just my .02 from personal experience)

Wouldn't be as reliable? Where do you get this information from?

A 3g GT is not "basically a GST". That is the overstatement of the week. Anyways, I would stay away from any and all dealerships if you are on a budget. Check craigslist and similar classified listings. Wait for a good deal on a GST or GSX. As far a 1g/2g whichever you like best. They are both great cars. Good luck!

Also wait the 1 to 2 months, you won't regret it. A 98 GS with a turbo is still not a GST. 1g and 2g GST's and GSX's have 4G63 engines (the same engine that is in the Mitsubishi EVO's) while the 2g GS's have 420A engines (the same engine that is in a Dodge Neon). Your call.

If the dealer only wants 1800 you could probably get the same car from a local seller for about a grand.

Would you really want to invest the time and money of turboing a $1000 car?

Wait for the gst, or start looking at 1g's.

From my experience if you need relabilty it coasts you. I have the 420a still non turbo and its an ok dd but i road in a 97 gsx and wanted to sell my gs. If you are willing to do you own work you can get a good deal and have a fun project/dd

You should wait for a turbo DSM no matter how long it takes, IMHO. If you think a 3g is like a GS-T, then you will be greatly surprised when you first drive a car with a 4G63T. And if you think a turboed 420a is anything like a GS-T, you will be disappointed after you do it. It takes a lot of money and know-how to turbo a 420a safely and after spending more money in the end you'll still have a car that likely won't even outperform a stock turbo DSM. I would also highly recommend getting one with awd, but if you're in a hurry just buy the first clean one you can afford. As was said before, look at 1g's too if they are of any interest to you, being as they will be much cheaper.

i owned a 3g GTS at one time with just a catback on it raced my buddys talon with intake, full exhaust, and 16 psi..... i thought it would be a good race.... his was awd... enuff said not so much

if i were you i'd hold out and get a 4g car, i spent 1300 just turboing my car, but its ultimately your decision but the rs/gs is slow....trust me, i know from experience.
thats why mine's turbo, and i'm not going back to N/A for nothin!

Get a 4g? LOL, this is coming from a guy with a 420A and lambo doors.

My point is proven by Carter_95RS who has a turboed 420a and still recommends a 4G63T.

wait for a gst... dont get the gs... and there are threads here why not to turbo your non turbo dsm... dont get me wrong but i had a non turbo eclipse and yea it ran nice with bolt ons, but if your looking for power then i suggest going with the gst...
