I looked under my hood 2day....no symmetrical support areas like that, that I saw, there is an area over the air filter kind of, but I don't know how much of function it could have there, I know I wanted to cut out the front of the power bulge, I've been thinking about it for awhile now & I just might do it, to hold me over before I put real vents in the areas i want them

You can but I would start on the drivers side and make it narrow enough to stop short of the bump. Then use the mirror image of that shape on the other side.

I'm thinking of more triangular, trapezoidal or rectangular shaped vents. They all line up with each other and the left and right sides are mirror images.

Probably not possible. The head's only running a few hundred degrees where any water can get to it, other than in the water jacket. Aluminum begins to go plastic around 400°F, yet lives in the combustion chambers' 3000°+.

Guys, sorry to bust your bubble but, really hot exhaust manifold + really cold rain water = cracked manifold.

Bust your bubble. I haven't heard that for along time. Anyways most people have a manifold heat shield on.
 
The EVO can get water on it's heat sheild too.

Anyone with half a brain will have the exhaust manifold wraped in insulation and the heat sheild on.

Getting the heat to stay in and go out the exhaust system is a big help for many things including under hood temps.

The vents help further by promoting airflow thru the radiator and out the hood.
 
Point taken, it's just that I know of people who run their car w/o a heat shield.

why would anyone want to do that?

higher engine bay temperatures, less heat in manifold means less exit velocity, which means slower spool time, your paint on your hood above the mani will start to bubble and melt off...

im not running a fancy tubular header that loves to shatter when it gets hot, i have a big thick ass cast iron one covered in kevlar and a heat shield. my egts tend to stay pretty high because of that, but not to the point where it or the turbine side of the turbo or the turbine itself turns to slag

Another option, one I have been planning on doing for a while but will probably not get around to until the EVO 9 comes out, is to purchase a hood scoop and turn it around backwards.

Cut a hole in the hood, put the scoop on as an extractor (backwards) instead of an air scoop, and then put a piece of weather stripping near the mouth of the scoop to prevent water from "rolling down" the hood and into the engine bay. This may prove a better option for those in incliment weather areas or those worried about water getting into the engine bay.

www.carbontrix.com sells a few small scoops that could do the trick.

But as you can see, their scoops are a little different and it may be more difficult trying to completely eliminate the possibility of water getting into the engine bay as oppossed to a hood scoop like the 00+ Mustang GT scoops.


Another option I have thought about was buying a WRX, NOT the STi, scoop and using it as an extractor... the only thing is that vendors want around $150 or so for this scoop. Carbon trix's scoops are only around $50-$80.

So its up to the individual as to how much you want to spend :D
 
Another option for you 2g guys that want to cut the holes out at the same location as greyforestgst did, but want to keep the rain out as much as possible, could use this scoop set. Obviously I am refering to turning the scoops backwards and using them as extractors which is not shown in the picture, but you get the gist of the idea.

You could cover both holes up and it would still look cool ;)

To sum up my ideas on possible OEM hood scoops that would be good to use as heat extractors are:

1) 00+ Mustang GT hood scoop ($150)
2) European/Japan spec Toyota Supra MKIV hood scoop ($150)
3) Subaru WRX or STi hood scoop ($150)

All prices are estimates of what I've seen/heard... they may vary from vendor to vendor.

grey, that looks really good.

This will only work on 2G's though, the underside of the 1G hood is completely different.

I wonder though, would water present a problem at all with that config?

Grey, can you see the engine easily (as easily as in earz photoshop) through the holes?
 
Nice design. I did mine a little different. I had found a ( I know ) honda
I think that had the vent I put on top of the bubble and cut a hole in the front of the bubble that has a plastic insert that is also vented to direct air in.
The theory is that at speed the hot air is sucked out the vent on top of the bubble from low pressure. I did have to cut a very little bit of the webbing on the underside. I'll try to get a pic of the underside up in my gallery soon.

there would be openings above a bunch of ignition components, so i dont think id risk it, unless you get one of those nifty msd boxes and have your coil pack somewhere else.

yes, you can see the engine pretty easily. and that is a pretty good photoshop...not sure if i like it though, ill just stick to my method.

could someone supply the picture of the bottom of a 1g hood? just curious...thinkin about making templates for both generations.
 
This design would be awsome on a OEM style carbon fiber hood. Like what was talked about earlier though, cf shreads. Ive got an idea. The members on here that sell the CF lip and spark plug cover and hoods and stuff could duplicate Greys hood with the vents in carbon fiber.

But isn't the stock ignition system designed to take some water?

I have an idea to make it so water can't directly fall through as well (when car is parked) by putting a type of shield there sort of...
 
I'm going to be running EVO style COP. So my coils are covered.

All anybody really needs to do at minimum. Vent or not. Good wires with a nice dollop of dielectric grease in the connector boot. If it's filled with that water can't get in.

As for a sheild put a scoop inside and make a gutter at the lip and a drain tube at the end.
 
I still want to know if it would be possible for the RMDSM guys to make a clone of greys hood but in CF.
 
would it almost be eaiser to just get a carbon one and cut holes in it?
