My only stupid criticism is that the joints on the molding don't line up with each other. Still, a terrific job that looks great. Interesting how asymmetrical the other ribs under there are.

Keep us posted on how well the trim stays in place, it may tend to wander with heat cycles.

The rain that comes in shouldn't have any effect. You're getting much more than that in through the nose, through the radiators while driving in the rain.

An interesting experiment would be to take a mess of yarn tufts and tape them onto the hood, around and on the vents, and see what the airflow does at speed. You'll likely find that air is drawn _in_ those vents while moving.

the rubber tends to get more pliable when it gets hot, but it really doesnt deform it. havent tested long enough to see what will happen.

as for air moving in at higher speeds, im pretty sure its a given. oh, the turbo sounds quite a bit louder now too, to me at least. now i just gotta cut some big holes over my blow off valve and im good :thumb:
kidding. i think ill do some in my front bumper though, because the fmic sticks up like 5 inches past the top lip of the plastic.
 
Very tastefully done. Makes me go to the drawing board for something similar but totally different:)

I need to do this bad.... how difficult, or damaging woul it be to do this to an oem style CF hood

good question

i have absolutely zero experience with carbon fiber...the only thing i knew was that if i ####ed up my hood, i would just go get one to replace mine :laugh:

all i know is that cf kind of "shreds" when it peels apart...if i had to throw out a guess, i would say that no, it wont work on a cf hood, unless you get a nice drop-in insert to cover all your tearing. feel free to prove me wrong :thumb:
 
So what about being in snow etc...? I have a 1g and would I have to get the manny wrap stuff? I mean, if it snows after I am done driving the snow can/will sit there for a while? Being anal/paranoid, I would like to come up with something above (hood scoop or something) or below to keep water/snow from having such easy access. Maybe I'm just paranoid. Thoughts, comments, discuss....

you could always make a little block of plate so that druring the winter you take off the screen and screw the plate on so that nothing can get in there. I don't know just a suggestion. I am going to look into doing this when i get my car back that shit looks sick as #### man good job.
 
Yeah, it looks awesome, don't get me wrong, and I would do anything to cool down the bay, but the terrified paranoia always gets the best of me.
 
I would be no more worried about snow from the top than water from below. Remember, every puddle you drive through shoots cold water into yer engine bay.

well done - enough water could cause head warpage -- but i REALLY doubt ya would get anywere close to that from just rainfall.
 
That looks good.

An original low buck idea pulled of to look professional.

Just make sure you got the edge of that metal covered with paint where you cut.

It's got me thinking too.

I wanted a hood vent as well.

I'll take this idea and run with it a bit.

The rear most largest segments of the support are where I'd do it.

1. Heat rises and it is the highest point of the hood.

2. Any water would hit the intake manifold not the exhaust.

3. They would be huge.

4. Aerodynamics by the windsheild base will help pull air out.


One could come up with a plastic inner baffle that catches water and sends it out a drain tube.
 
The front two places like where you did it don't have any of the bulge in the sheet metal.

The middle and back grids of the support do so you can't use the full width.

I'm still thinking of doing it further back.

I'll have to look at car pics for cars with flat hood vents to get shaping ideas.

I still think that was a smart one!
 
this makes me realy wish for a non bump hood, which would alow for many other types of venting
 
The more forward vents like that work well. They work exceptionally well for dumping turbo heat when stopped. In a search engine I found links of engineers trying different vents.

The most ghetto was lifting the rear of the hood.

The best were actual add on cowls and flat vents.

Many of them were tested with strips of yarn and the yarn got sucked into the cowl while in motion indicating that the air compressed a bit and the bottom of the windshield and went to the lowpressure area under the hood. When stoped the yarn tuffts (skinny strands) pointed out towards the windshield indicating the hear was coming out when stopped. Some tests had the opposite in motion with the airflow thru the front of the body was enough to flow out the back of the hood.

You probaly can't see the yarn strings from the inside where his vents are but I'm guessing it works well but differently. Some of the air that went thru the radiator goes out the vents.

correct...

im going to hardwire up a switch to force-on both fans that i can just flip sitting in the car at stoplights and whatnot.

oh, drove in the rain today. everything was cool.


one big minus, sadly, is that you can hear lifter tick a lot, lot worse. guess it lets you know when the engine is warm though, cuz it does stop after that.

i really do think you could do it on the next two or even four, even though the bump is there

when you screw in the mesh it can conform to the shape quite easily. itll look strange by itself, yeah, but if you do all six then it wouldnt look goofy
