I am new to modding DSMs heavily, (but I've owned a 1g AWD since '92) but I've been working on V8s and Offroad vehicles for over 4 years now. I'm now working on a SCCA rally car.

If you think hood vents and scoops are non-functional rice toys, maybe you should check out some WRC rally cars. They have very intricate hood scoop and vent systems. Almost all road racing cars have hood vents.

Also, you could do some research on "heat soak" and how it affects many aspects of a car's performance, as well as the longevity of many parts, tubes and hoses in the engine bay. Intake temps. are still another factor.

This stuff has been given a bad rap by ricers and their non-functional cosmetic modifications. But where do you think the ricers got their styling ideas from? Real Race Cars.

Even more functional than simply cutting holes are aerodynamically designed vents and scoops. Check out Carbontrix.com. The reverse hood vents they sell create a vacuum at the hood opening, sucking hot air from your turbo and radiator. Same principe that a cowl induction scoop works. Looks and functios better than an open hole.

Drag racers that boost 13 sec. or less at a time will benefit less than a autox, rally or hard driven street car, obviously. I'm not sure how much benefit a drag racer would gain from this stuff...

This thread probably belongs in "Engine Performance" more than "Non-Performance Mods".

Thanks,
Dave

time to open up an old can of worms...

nice mod and nice car ...
but what aboout puttin a scoop where the intake is i duno what its called the specific name but i seen many honda's with a scoop on their intake side when they are not running CAI due to hydrolocking issues....
can anoyone help coz id put on on my intake side but im not sure if it will look good has to look somewhat decent too...:D

Im really interested on doing this for my 1Gb. Would you guys recomend me trying this?

yes!!! post pics i wana see whut it looks like!! hopefully as good as the 2g

hey brandon we can do it together...are u free on mondays and tuesda;ys?

I say go for it. Plan it out and take your time, what do you have to lose. I think it looks bad ass. Would do it if I still had my dsm.

Damm I really want to do this. And I just might!:thumb: Brent I work on Mondays and I go to night school on Tuesday's along with school during the day. I work at 4 on Monday and at 5 on Tuesday. If I can try to squeeze in a couple hours we could do it together.

Im going to tackle it. Ill make all the 1G bro's proud. Wish me luck. Ill start when I have a free day on my hands.

You know if you guys would pull your heads out of your ass and think about it from a non cosmetic aproch it has a good chance at giveing you MAYBE 1 - 2 more hp.. WHY?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeell Why do we use intercoolers? Why not just stright to the intake, I mean it would be a shorter path  Obviusly we want to cool that air as much as possible before it reach's the engine. By doing this you lower under the hood intake temps, and unless you have a CAI setup on your turbo then this should help a small amount.

I say a small amount because I would think 20*f or so in driveing conditions and probly more at idel. Dont you think lower your intake air that much might just get rid of 1 or 2 counts of knock?

i suggested maybe someone try and put vent type thing on the intake side so it would sort of be like a CAI...i dun think u can put a CAI on a turbo dsm well i dont see where the pipe would go other than straight down undernearth the engine...
theres no place to put it near the fender liner.....
but it has to look half decent as well, cant make it look like ass because its boosting performance, has to be asthetically plesing as well and most dsm'ers would agree, no one wants to make their car look ugly by doing tacky mods...
anyways peace

ive pretty much got mine done, ill be posting in a few days when i get my digi camera from the ups man...sorry i wont be able to take pics of the process just the finished product

Cant wait to see the results Brent. To bad we couldnt do this mod together. Im going to start this weekend.

yeah...what sux is, carquest doesnt have that shit so i had to get mine from autozone which was 30 bucks and its alot bulkier than the stuff they used...u cna have my leftovers LOL

Hey guys , Im excited some ppl have gone ahead and tried this mod out, but it seems to me that their are some problems that need to be addressed.

Iether than being a cheap mod that any body with common sense could do those vent's would only suffice in "venting out" hot air is when it is stopped. Meaning when the car is in motion those evo like vents acctually draw air in causing lag.

You in no way shape or form can even compare how the evo's grill VENTS OUT hot air because the aerodynamics arent the same. The evo's hood is a much flatter surface area than a 2g's or even a 1g's so it does vent air when moving . The dsm front fascia is slanted down wards to promote a type of downforce. So basically that mod when moving would only draw in air rather then exduce it.

I am making my own hood vent much like those jdm drift cars have where a peice of the hood portudes inward to the engine bay thus causing a sort of vacume that acctually vents hot air out while moving and while stationary.

I am not the originator of the idea but it did take me some time to figure out how to properly do it . Here is a pick of what I will be doing this month , ps this was pirated from Jesus Riveras Drag race car.

here is a pick of jesus riveras race hood. Un fortunately I cannot post these pics because they are to big. If you could go to www.fastandfuriouseast.com then go to archives and search for aerocompracing, you will inturn see the intended hood vent . Im sorry but it seemed their site was'nt working properly so I was'nt able to get a direct link.
